PLANT CONSERVATION GENETICS INTERN

Description

Funding will support 20 hours per week for 4 months.

Position Purpose

The Plant Conservation Genetics Intern will assist in the field and lab to study evolutionary relationships and population genetics of rare and endangered cacti (with special emphasis on hedgehog cacti, Echinocereus). The intern will have opportunities to work in the field to survey for cacti, record field data, and collect tissue to be used for genetic work. The intern will also work in the lab to determine DNA content using flow cytometry, extract DNA, and prepare samples for sequencing.

Essential Duties

• Conduct fieldwork within and outside the Garden to acquire plant material and evaluate rare plant populations
• Perform routine lab protocols including minor maintenance of the laboratory workspace and equipment
• Maintain records of supplies, field samples (plant tissues, DNA), and daily activities in the field and lab
• Carry out DNA extraction, PCR amplification, gel electrophoresis, sample quantification, and/or preparation and submission of samples for genotyping and/or sequencing
• Conduct post-processing of field and genetic data, such as editing DNA sequences, scoring genotype data, and/or compiling and managing data matrices

Hourly Pay Rate: $21.00 per hour

Requirements

• Current student or recent graduate of a science-based college/university program, or equivalent to 1 year relevant experience
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Familiarity with laboratory techniques and safety
• Ability to observe, ask questions, and adapt techniques as needed
• Comfortable working with knives and spiny plants
• Able to work independently and in collaboration with a team
• Valid driver’s license preferred
• Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends
• Capable of working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including high heat (=90°F)

• Standard office equipment
• Laboratory tools and fieldwork gear, as required

Internal Communication

• Frequent interaction with Garden staff, supervisors, and team members

External Communication

• Occasional communication with scientists, volunteers, students, community members, and collaborators

Working Conditions

• This position includes both office-based tasks and outdoor fieldwork. Field activities may require hiking while carrying equipment and working in high temperatures.
