Job Description - Power Electronics Engineering Intern

Eaton\u2019s CTO Corporate Technology Office division is currently seeking a Power Electronics Engineering Intern.\n\nThe hourly rate for this position is $37.50 per hour.\n\nPlease note the salary information shown above is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon candidate skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. \n\n## What you\u2019ll do:\n\nJob Summary \nEaton\u2019s Research Labs (ERL) has an exciting Engineering Intern position in the Power Conversion group to support research and technology development in emerging technology programs. The job function includes developing and testing innovative power conversion technologies and support senior engineers in software, hardware development and testing. The individual will also suport the ongoing modeling, simulation, and HIL development. A key role will be to support presenting ideas and projects to Eaton business leaders and leadership. Ability to develop models and simulate in common power electronics simulation packages is necessary. Communicate complicated technologies in a clear and concise way to a variety of different audiences. A good blend of technical knowledge and is required to be successful in this position. The successful candidate will be reporting to the Technology Manager. This position is in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. \n\n\nJob Responsibilities \n\n * As a technical intern, support emerging power conversion \u0026 power system solutions based on breakthrough technologies for industrial and aerospace applications.\n * Participate in technology projects by supporting teams (local and remote resources) and working with external technology resources (Business Divisions, Universities and Customers).\n * Support advancement of state of the art power electronics, power systems, and power converter technologies, as well as supporting the identification of commercialization opportunities with diverse Eaton businesses. \n * Collaborate with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural globally distributed teams, support specific task within the scope of work and provide updates to project manager.\n * Support project plans, and deliver results on budget and schedule.\n * Support projects with partners from national labs, universities and other research institutes.\n\n\n\n## Qualifications:\n\nBasic Qualifications:\n\n * PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering specializing in Power Electronics.\n\n\n * One year of experience in a PhD program.\n\n\n\nTechnical knowledge \n\nPower Electronics \u0026 Motor Drives \n\u2022 Fundamentals in low and medium voltage power conversion and power systems engineering, including creating specifications, defining application space, designing technical solution concepts, and building and testing prototypes to validate models/hypotheses and documenting results. \n\u2022 Familiar with motor drive technology, including drive and converter topologies, power electronics, electric machines, machine control strategies, energy storage systems, grid connected converters, and alternative power generation/distribution systems. \n\u2022 Understanding of the trade-offs required to balance performance, reliability, serviceability, and cost in power electronic system design. \nModeling \u0026 Simulation \n\u2022 Experienced in modeling power converters and power systems using industry-standard simulation tools: MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, Simplorer, PSIM, and PSCAD. \n\u2022 Familiar with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) development and validation using platforms such as Opal RT. \nPackaging, Parasitics \u0026 Insulation \n\u2022 Knowledge of electromechanical packaging techniques for power electronics. \n\u2022 Understanding of the effects of parasitic inductance and capacitance on converter performance, and familiarity with methods to minimize, control, or mitigate parasitics. \n\u2022 Familiar with creepage and clearance requirements, insulation methods, and interconnection technologies used in high-power and high-voltage systems. \n\u2022 Awareness of various thermal management and cooling techniques for power electronic components. \nReal-Time Simulation \u0026 Control \n\u2022 Familiar with real-time simulation platforms including dSPACE, OPAL RT, and RTDS for rapid prototyping, control development, and system-level validation. \nWide-Bandgap (WBG) Technology \n\u2022 Familiar with SiC and GaN\u2013based power conversion, including associated challenges and performance benefits. \n\u2022 Experience or exposure to double pulse testing, gate driver design, and auxiliary power supply design for WBG devices.\n\n## Skills:\n\nSoft skills \n\n * Good English communication and presentation skills (oral and written).\n * Experience presenting value proposition of new technologies.\n\n\n\nWe are committed to ensuring equal employment opportunities for all job applicants and employees.
