Position Summary

Under the direction of the Neighborhood Services Manager, the Prevention Intern is responsible for the creation of a West Valley City specific substance misuse and overdose prevention guide/toolkit highlighting local prevention efforts, resources, and relevant data. This internship is a temporary, grant funded position, for approximately 30-35 hours per week through the end of August 2025.

Starting Pay: $20.00 per hour

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Schedule: Temporary part time, 30-35 hours per week

Posting Close Date: May close any time after June 27th, 2025

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create the WVC Prevention Toolkit to be distributed for educational purposes to support educating the community on existing prevention efforts and data in the community.
  • Work with local translators and public health and social services workers to ensure the guide/toolkit is culturally relevant, translatable, and accessible.
  • Coordinate and implement the development of summer education series on opioid use and prevention.
  • Collaborate with a contracted media company to develop an engaging, community-oriented online mini-series focused on opioid prevention.
  • Support other ongoing community prevention projects as appropriate, including but not limited to Healthy West Valley Initiatives by engaging with and educating community members in navigating resources and information related to opioid prevention.
  • Engage and collaborate with partners and other local coalitions, such as South Salt Lake Promise and Salt Lake County, as appropriate.
  • Report work to the Neighborhood Services Manager and to the Healthy West Valley Coalition.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • A working knowledge of substance misuse issues, public health, and/or prevention practices.
  • Evidence of commitment to the mission of West Valley City and Healthy West Valley
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to self-start, learn new skills, and work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, and the public.
  • Skills in professional office settings, including knowledge of common computer software including the Google Suite and Canva.

Education and/or Experience

  • The active pursuit of a relevant degree; OR 2-4 years of relevant education or experience, which may include Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.

Language Skills

  • Must be able to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.
