Job Description - PRP Intern

About Maryland Wellness

At Maryland Wellness, we foster hope, dignity, and growth by providing compassionate behavioral health and wellness services to individuals, families, and communities across Maryland. We are guided by values of Compassion, Commitment, Respect, Collaboration, Transparency, and Innovation — and we extend those same values inward, creating a workplace where staff and interns feel supported, valued, and set up to do meaningful work.

The Personal Wellness Center in Salisbury is home to a multidisciplinary team serving children, adolescents, and families in the community. This internship is a direct pipeline into our Family Support Specialist (FSS) program — one of the most hands-on, community-based behavioral health roles we offer. Here at MD Wellness, we believe PRP is one of the programs that serve as our 'heartbeat', especially in our local communities!

About The Internship Program

The PRP Intern role is designed for BSW students who are ready to apply classroom learning in a real clinical environment. You will work alongside licensed clinicians and program staff to support youth and families enrolled in Maryland Wellness's Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program (PRP), gaining direct experience in case management, behavioral intervention, family support, crisis de-escalation, and documentation.

This is not a shadowing role. You will be an active contributor to the team from day one, with direct client contact, structured supervision, and the opportunity to develop the skills that translate directly into a full-time FSS or PRP Counselor career at graduation.

This internship may satisfy BSW field placement requirements. Students are encouraged to confirm eligibility with their academic program coordinator.

 What You Will Do

  • Support assigned caseloads alongside Family Support Specialists, collaborating with families to assess needs and implement interventions outlined in youth treatment plans
  • Assist with direct intervention sessions using techniques such as role-playing, behavior modification, positive behavioral coaching, and crisis de-escalation
  • Help connect youth and families to community resources, government programs, and additional support services
  • Participate in skills training sessions focused on behavioral, communication, coping, and problem-solving development
  • Shadow and assist with crisis intervention response under direct clinician supervision
  • Complete documentation of client interactions in compliance with HIPAA standards and agency guidelines
  • Attend staff meetings, clinical supervisions, and required training sessions
  • Support community outreach activities, workshops, and group programming as assigned
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to support holistic, coordinated client care

What We Are Looking For

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program — rising juniors and seniors preferred
  • Genuine interest in working with children, adolescents, and families in a behavioral health setting
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport with youth and families from diverse backgrounds
  • Basic understanding of child development, mental health challenges, and community-based intervention
  • Reliable, responsible, and able to manage time independently in a fast-moving environment
  • Comfortable with documentation and basic computer skills
  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle preferred (community-based visits may be required)
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Creole is a plus, but not required
  • Must be able to pass a Maryland background check

What You Will Gain

  • Direct, supervised clinical experience with children, adolescents, and families in a PRP setting
  • Exposure to evidence-based behavioral health practices and real-world case management
  • Structured supervision from licensed clinical staff
  • A clear pathway to full-time employment as a Family Support Specialist or PRP Counselor upon graduation
  • A letter of recommendation and professional reference upon successful completion
  • Field placement hours that may count toward BSW program requirements (confirm with your school)
