Range Education Intern

Organization Description

The Center on Colfax has grown to become the largest LGBTQ+ community center in the Rocky Mountain region. The Center is a collaborative leader that positively impacts the lived experience of LGBTQ+ people in Denver and Colorado by creating inclusive programs and events, fostering connections, and leveraging the individual and collective strengths of the community. In addition, the Center produces Denver PrideFest/Parade/Pride 5K, the largest Pride celebration in the Rocky Mountain Region. 

General Description

The Range Education Program of The Center on Colfax is accepting applications for an intern to assist us with a variety of projects. The mission of The Center is to engage, empower, enrich, and advance the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community of Colorado.

Internship Description

The Intern should be prepared to work on topics such as creating curriculum, connecting with local businesses, and helping support the Range Program. The person selected will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of gender and sexuality work. This will be a project-based internship with components of programming, education, and outreach. People from marginalized backgrounds (women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, etc.) are especially encouraged to apply.

Potential Learning Outcomes

• Increasing students’ knowledge of feminist and LGBTQ+ issues through conversations with staff in the center as well as their own research.
• Learning about bystander intervention, and how to challenge and interrupt oppressive behavior and language.
• Strengthening their abilities to provide information and resources to folks wanting to learn more about LGBTQ+ people.
• Understanding the mission, vision, and purpose of The Center, and gaining confidence working in community center/nonprofit & educational spaces.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assists with brainstorming and executing outreach including (but not limited to) tabling events.
• Assists with brainstorming and planning Range events.
• Assists with trainings and workshops.
• Other duties as needed.

Qualifications

• Commitment to feminist trans, queer, and intersectional community building.
• Experience working in education spaces and LGBTQ+ advocacy.
• Understanding of LGBTQ+ identities and intersectionality.
• Capacity to work independently, on a team, and in support of other staff (including students and full-time staff).
• Interest in speaking to community members.
• Interest in working in programming, outreach, or social justice-related fields.
• Interest in supporting the mission of The Center.

Working Conditions

• Internship will be June 1 – August 7, approximately 10 hours per week. Start date could be anytime between May 20 - June 10.
• Occasional weekends.
• Work in a collaborative, fast-paced and continually evolving environment.
• Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. with reasonable accommodations.
• Frequent use of computers, Microsoft Office Suite and video conference equipment and software. 
• Bilingual/Spanish speaking preferred.
