Internship with Advancing Safety Through Employment Rights at Futures Without Violence


Location: Remote (Washington, D.C.)
Term/Length: Summer Internship: Summer 2026, Six to Ten Weeks


Compensation: Unpaid, with a potential $2,000 stipend available to eligible students. Students must demonstrate available funding through their law school or law student public interest internship stipend programs as part of their application.

About Futures Without Violence and the Project


Futures Without Violence (FUTURES) is a national nonprofit that provides groundbreaking programs, policies, and campaigns that empower individuals and organizations working to end violence against women and children around the world. Our vision is a future without violence that provides education, safety, justice and hope.



The Advancing Safety Through Employment Rights provides education and resources designed to enhance attorneys and advocates in their work supporting survivors in accessing state and local employment protections. This internship offers a unique opportunity to engage at the intersection of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, stalking and sexual harassment, the access to justice gap, and employment law.



Internship Purpose and Goals


The intern will support implementation of the Advancing Safety Through Employment Rights project by:



  • Conducting legal research on state employment protections relevant to survivors of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

  • Assisting in development of guides, templates, and tools (e.g. for advocates, workplaces, survivors).

  • Supporting planning and logistics of webinars, learning communities, and other training events.

  • Engaging in outreach, resource dissemination, and engagement activities.

  • Contributing to strategy and problem solving within the project team.



By the end of the internship, the intern should deepen knowledge of employment protections for survivors, strengthen advocacy and communications skills, and contribute substantively to advancing this work. As an intern with the Advancing Safety Through Employment Rights Project, the intern will have opportunities to build their professional network.



Key Responsibilities


Depending on interests, skills, and project needs, responsibilities may include:



  • Legal/policy research (requests for information from state agencies, case law, statutes, regulations, administrative rules) on relevant topics (e.g. leave laws, employment discrimination, reasonable accommodations, workplace stalking, retaliation)

  • Comparative review of state statutes or state guides on employment rights

  • Drafting or editing resource materials, toolkits, infographics, FAQs, checklists

  • Supporting the design, coordination, and promotion of webinars, training events, or learning exchanges

  • Outreach and partnership support (e.g. compiling interest holder lists, preparing briefing memos, assisting with communications)

  • Participating actively in team meetings

  • Proposing ideas for strategy and solutions to problems or challenges.



Qualifications and Desired Attributes




We seek someone who:



Education and Experience (required or preferred):



  • Currently enrolled in an accredited law school (1L, 2L, or 3L) (required)

  • Coursework or interest in employment or labor law, administrative law, civil rights, public interest law, or related fields (preferred)

  • Some prior research, writing, or policy/advocacy experience (preferred)

  • Experience supporting survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking (preferred)


Skills and Competencies:



  • Strong legal research and writing skills

  • Ability to synthesize complex legal content into user‑friendly materials

  • Strong communication skills (writing, editing, verbal)

  • Comfortable with collaborative work in a team environment

  • Flexible, proactive, resourceful, able to problem‑solve

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to shifting priorities

  • Alignment with mission and values of FUTURES: trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and committed to increasing access to justice.

  • Funding Notes: Though legal internship positions are unpaid, FUTURES will work with legal interns to apply for funding through their law school or law student public interest internship stipend programs. Futures will provide a stipend of $2,000 for those students who are lawfully authorized to work in addition to the funding provided through either their law school or external scholarship program.
