Job Summary:

This is a developmental opportunity for active-duty military personnel who will be separating from the military in the next 3-6 months. The SkillBridge Internship Program is designed to provide on-the-job training and experience in the civilian sector to Skillbridge applicants. SkillBridge is a Department of Defense (DoW) program which matches civilian opportunities to a military member’s job training and work experience at the end of their military duty.

Incumbents engage in various work assignments, projects and activities of varying complexity, structured so the participant has an opportunity to apply principles and theories, explore a career path and gain the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform at a professional level (as typically identified by an existing classification within Spokane County). Participants receive training, supervision and mentorship by a professional in their field. The participant may take part in professional development opportunities via conferences, seminars, online events, and other means.

Job Description:

We are currently recruiting to fill vacancies in the following department(s):

  • PARKS, GOLF, & RECREATION

This position is within the Parks, Golf, and Recreation Division, supporting operations across Spokane County Parks. Responsibilities include patrolling and enforcing park rules, educating visitors, delivering interpretive programs, and performing semi-skilled maintenance and groundskeeping tasks. These efforts ensure public safety, enhance recreational experiences, and protect County resources.

  • MEDICAL EXAMINER

This role offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into the operations of the Medical Examiner’s Office while developing essential skills for the positions of both a Deputy Medical Investigator and an Autopsy Assistant under the guidance of the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office (SCMEO) staff. Key responsibilities involve supporting forensic investigations of deaths within the jurisdiction of the SCMEO, which includes tasks such as forensic photography, scene processing, identifying next of kin, report writing, gathering medical histories, and presenting cases to the doctors. Additionally, the position entails assisting pathologists and autopsy personnel during autopsies, which may involve forensic photography, preparing workstations, conducting X-rays, fingerprinting, collecting toxicology samples, and aiding in evisceration procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provides entry- to intermediate-level professional services, under supervision of professional staff and/or a supervisor, as appropriate to the day-to-day operating objectives of the unit.
  • Undertakes and/or participates in projects and programs designed to develop professional skills and expertise appropriate to the needs of the organization.
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of unit projects and initiatives within area of expertise.
  • Interacts directly with colleagues, clientele, and/or other internal or external constituencies in the planning of assignments and the resolution of day-to-day operational problems.
  • Receives guidance, training, and mentoring from professional personnel in planning and carrying out activities and assignments.
  • As appropriate to the position and as specified by unit management, conducts original research and prepares reports based on findings, to include recommendations or alternative proposals for action.
  • May undertake related studies or enrichment programs as appropriate to the specific objectives of the operating unit.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be eligible for DoW SkillBridge program as defined here: https://skillbridge.osd.mil/index.htm
  • No previous work experience is required. 
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
