Job Title: 2026 Summer Social Media Intern

Internship Period: 10 weeks, beginning Date: June 2026- August 2026

Hours: 40 hours per week

Schedule: Some nights and weekends

Location: 621 East Pratt Street | Baltimore, Maryland, 21202

About the Internship:

The Banner newsroom is looking for a social media intern to join us in our newsroom this summer. The social media intern will be responsible for creating a variety of social media content, including vertical videos, graphic posts and text posts. There will be a strong emphasis on vertical video, which is one of the hallmarks of the Banner’s digital presence. The social media intern will join Banner staff to report in the field, record videos, edit videos and to help post them.

The social media intern should be comfortable appearing on camera and interviewing people on the street. They should be skilled at recording on an iPhone and know how to edit using CapCut or Adobe Premier. Experience in lighting, audio or animation is a plus.

Social media content will be drawn from Banner reporting, which may include original reporting by the intern. Interns will be expected to pitch their own ideas and write scripts with strong hooks. The majority of assignments in this role will revolve around social media — not written stories.

We are looking for someone who understands the importance of social media in journalism and is excited to use the format as a tool to reach new audiences, build trust with those audiences and make an impact. We want to make videos that are engaging, entertaining, shareable and enlightening. Interns will be assigned a mentor and attend weekly sessions to build their journalism skills.

What you'll bring:

  • Experience from a college newspaper or previous internship

  • Interesting story ideas

  • Clear and concise writing skills

  • Previous experience with producing social media videos

  • Familiarity with softwares such as Canva, CapCut and/or Adobe Premier

  • Knowledge of emerging trends and journalism and digital communications

  • Openness to new ideas, editing and learning from veteran journalists and editors

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member

  • Flexibility and ability to adjust to the changing news cycle

  • Ability to learn about new subjects quickly and accurately

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States - unfortunately, sponsorship will not be provided for this position.

Internship Benefits:

  • Hands-on work experience within a fast-paced digital newsroom

  • Exposure to and coaching from editors and senior newsroom leaders who want to see you succeed

  • Participation in Banner Bites Training to help develop new skills

  • Fantastic culture and work environment

  • Direct responsibilities that impact our organizations success

  • The opportunity to cover news in one of the most interesting states in America
