Job Description - STINKNET RESEARCH INTERN

Description

This is a grant-based internship. Pay is $17.50 per hour. Temporary part time role, 10 - 40 hours per week for 7.5 - 14 weeks.

 

To provide support for research on stinknet (Oncosiphon piluliferum), particularly it’s impacts on the environment, and land managers perspectives on the invasive and mitigation approaches.

Position Description

This internship will provide research on stinknet, particularly on land manager’s perspectives and mitigation approaches. Additionally, this research will question what barriers land managers face when addressing invasive species.

The intern will report to the CAZCA program director at the Desert Botanical Garden and will also be interacting with other organizations (non-profits, municipalities, etc.) to conduct this research. This internship is virtual.

About Central Arizona Conservation Alliance (CAZCA)

The Central Arizona Conservation Alliance (CAZCA) is an initiative of Desert Botanical Garden. We convene partner organizations to pursue conservation projects, and outreach and education initiatives. For more information please visit cazca.org.

Essential Duties

  • Develop survey to answer the research questions
  • Build this survey in an appropriate platform
  • Develop the methods for analysis
  • Conduct the survey
  • Analyze the results of the survey and develop a report
  • Present the report to the Desert Defenders group (virtually)
  • Potentially present the report to other interested parties

Requirements

  • Current college/university student or recent graduate from a science-based program college/university, or 2 years relevant experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong, demonstrated interest and knowledge of invasive plant species, conservation, environmental science, ecology, or related field 
  • Strong interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to work independently and within a collaborative environment 
  • Ability to create a research survey and analyze the results
  • Experience in computer programs including the Microsoft suite of programs
  • Valid driver’s license preferred 
  • Ability to work off-hours with occasional evenings or weekends 
  • Ability to work outdoors, sometimes in extreme (or pleasant) weather conditions

Equipment Used

Typical office equipment, plus specialized event and outdoor equipment.

Internal Communication

Regular communication with Garden employees.

External Communication

Regular communication with scientists, volunteers, advocates, academics, city/county representatives, and the general public.

Working Conditions

Physical demands include both those associated with a normal office environment, and some outdoor work, which will mostly be virtual.
