May coordinate activities for other student employees.  Requires providing excellent customer service, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work in a professional environment.  Requires previous experience and knowledge or skill in student assistant role.  Represent the department and the university with the highest degree of integrity applying OSU mission and shared values. 

Fish Health Student Position

THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN DELAWARE COUNTY and Hours are flexible. This position can work up to 28 hours if taking classes and up to 38 hours during the summer and/or academic breaks.

Summary: The purpose of the Fish Health student position is to strengthen student knowledge and skills within aquaculture production systems, fish diagnostics, and academic research. This is a 10-week (30 hr/week) summer student position hosted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) for a current veterinary student. The student will be supervised by Dr. Herbert Quintero throughout the summer. The student will have an overarching project focused on fish diagnostics, fish disease surveillance, water quality monitoring, fish sampling in different locations, and entering data associated with the fish health summer project. At the end of the summer, the student will prepare a 30-minute oral presentation seminar describing the outcomes from his/her project and write a 1,000-word article summarizing the project results.

Required Student Qualifications:

Enrolled within the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine as a 1st or 2nd year DVM student. Interest in fish/shrimp aquaculture production with emphasis on fish health. Previous experience with aquaculture production is helpful but not required. Complete the Online Fish Health Certificate Program for Producers. (University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point - UWSP)

Duties & Expectations:

Gather data relevant to the project under Dr. Quintero’s guidance. Present a 30-minute seminar and write a 1,000-word article summarizing the project results. Assist in fish sample collection, water quality and fish diagnostics at the ODA and locations throughout Ohio.
