The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) accelerates discovery for Ohio’s academic and commercial researchers with processing power exceeding 1,000 desktop computers available any time, any place. OSC turns days of computation into minutes, creating a competitive advantage for Ohio at a fraction of the cost of alternatives, all with expert consultation and secure storage. Learn more at osc.edu/explore.
OSC is a welcoming and supportive work environment and part of the Ohio Technology Consortium (OH-TECH). As the technology and information division of the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE), OH-TECH provides high-tech solutions for Ohio’s colleges and universities to catalyze innovation in the modern knowledge economy. In addition to OSC, OH-TECH also includes OARnet and OhioLINK.
Each summer, OSC hosts two different types of residential educational programs for youth participants: STEM Institute and Youth STEM Institute.
STEM Institute is the Ohio Supercomputer Center's two-week summer camp for Ohio's brightest high school students in their freshman, sophomore or junior years of high school, at time of application. Participants experience the dynamic fields of high performance computing and networking first hand. Working with a faculty of experts in high performance computing (HPC), networking, engineering and the sciences, students learn computing fundamentals such as programming languages, parallel processing techniques and visualization toolkits.
Youth STEM Institute (YSI) is the Ohio Supercomputer Center's week-long program for youth in Ohio, in sixth or seventh grade at the time of application. YSI is designed to promote computer, math, science and engineering skills, as well as to provide hands-on experiences. YSI helps youth develop an interest in these subjects by allowing them to work on an interesting and practical scientific problem using the latest computer technology.
Each program session includes a maximum of 25 youth participants and four to five Residential Summer Counselors.
For both programs, participants are under the care, custody, and control of OSC staff during normal business hours and are typically located at OSC’s offices on OSU’s West Campus. Outside of normal business hours they are under the care, custody, and control of Residential Summer Counselors and are typically located in an OSU Residential Hall on Main Campus.
OSC is committed to providing the best experience possible for youth involved in our summer programs. Staff is expected to hold themselves to the highest standards of conduct when interacting with youth. OSC Summer programs follow the OSU Youth Activities and Programs Policy, which establishes requirements that safeguard the wellbeing of youth.
Under the direction of OSC regular staff, OSC Student Assistant Summer Residential Counselors (RCs) serve as role models, advisors, program planners and support staff for youth participants in residence during the OSC Summer Education programs. A full room and board package is included with this position; RCs live in on-campus residences halls alongside participants and dine with them in the residential dining hall. This is an ideal role for candidates interested in strengthening their teamwork, mentoring, and leadership skills.
This position is a temporary full time (38+ hours per week for the duration of the Summer Program). This position is compatible with some limited outside work or classroom commitments during weekday business hours, but requires significant evening and weekend hours; all RCs are expected to be strongly engaged with the residential program and work closely with program participants on Sunday afternoons that a program is in session as well as each weekday after the academic day ends at approximately 5:00 PM. RCs are invited to attend field trips and lectures that program participants are involved with if they so desire.
A typical daily routine includes:
~7:30 AM – breakfast at OSU dining hall
~8:30 AM – campus bus to OSC offices and handoff of participants to OSC staff
~5:00 PM – handoff of participants from OSC staff and campus bus back to dorms
~6:00 PM – dinner at OSU dining hall and on-campus various recreation activities
~9:00 PM – curfew in dorm
~11:00 PM – lights out for participants
Significant outside responsibilities (such as a full-time job or extended travel outside Columbus) are not permitted if they conflict with Residential Counselor responsibilities.
Any off-campus, nighttime or weekend commitments, including travel outside Columbus during the term of employment, must be approved by the hiring manager prior to hiring.
