Job Description - Student Intern (Trainee) Mental Health
The Student Intern (Trainee) provides direct behavioral health services to adult clients admitted to National Psychiatric Care and Rehabilitation Services under the supervision of a qualified licensed clinician. This position is designed for graduate-level trainees completing practicum or internship requirements in marriage and family therapy, social work, psychology, or a related behavioral health discipline.
Interns participate in a highly structured, recovery-oriented crisis residential program and gain hands-on experience delivering individual, family, and group-based therapeutic services while working as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
General Responsibilities
Under the direction and supervision of the Program Director, Clinical Director/Supervisor, Lead Therapist, and/or other qualified licensed practitioners, the Student Intern (Trainee) will:
Facilitate clinician-led group therapy sessions consistent with program structure and treatment goals
Provide individual and family therapy sessions under supervision
Support clients in developing coping skills, emotional regulation, and stabilization strategies
Demonstrate therapeutic communication and maintain a calm, professional presence in emotionally charged situations
Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to support individualized client needs
Participate in case staffing, treatment team meetings, and supervision as scheduled
Complete required clinical documentation in a timely and professional manner, including progress notes and treatment-related paperwork
Learn and utilize the agency’s Electronic Health Record (PointClickCare) for documentation and clinical tracking
Assist with treatment planning, goal development, and documentation of client progress
Observe and adhere to NPCRS policies, procedures, and program standards
Participate in trainings and educational opportunities as assigned
Track and document clinical hours in accordance with school and licensing board requirements
Uphold professional and ethical standards, including applicable codes of ethics and confidentiality requirements
Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of a supervised trainee role
Supervision
All clinical services are provided under appropriate supervision
Interns participate in regularly scheduled individual and/or group supervision as required by their academic program and licensing board
Clinical hours and supervision are documented according to school and Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) or applicable board guidelines
Job Qualifications
Education:
Currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related behavioral health field
Actively completing practicum or internship requirements
Experience:
Prior coursework or experience in mental health, counseling, or human services preferred
Interest in working with adults experiencing acute psychiatric or emotional crises
Additional Requirements:
Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based clinical environment
Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills
Must meet all health, background, and clearance requirements applicable to the program
