Description

The Circulation Assistant provides frontline customer service at the library's main service desk and supports library operations more broadly, including project work that may take place away from the desk. This role reports directly to the Access Services Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Check materials in and out using the library's circulation system (currently Alma)

  • Answer patron questions about library services and policies

  • Monitor study areas and shelve returned materials, including pushing loaded book carts and shelving at various heights

  • Answer phones and direct inquiries as needed

  • Assist with opening and closing procedures

  • Report facilities, safety, or security concerns to library staff

  • Support special projects and tasks away from the desk as assigned

  • Use additional library systems as needed — training provided on all systems

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled student in good academic standing

  • Reliable, punctual, and detail-oriented

  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team

  • Strong communication skills; comfortable learning new software systems

  • Committed to professional customer service

  • Ability to stand, bend, reach, and push loaded carts for extended periods; reasonable accommodations available upon request

Schedule
Semester schedules are typically finalized very early in the semester and may shift during midterms and finals. Because this position provides shift coverage for teammates (illness, competitions, etc.), we're looking for candidates with broad, open availability across evenings and weekends — the more flexible your schedule, the stronger your fit. Maximum 20 hours/week per university policy; most students work fewer.

  • Check materials in and out, ensuring accurate record-keeping and inventory management.
  • Answer basic queries about library services, policies, and resources, directing patrons to the right resources.
  • Monitor study areas, maintaining a quiet and orderly environment for students.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures, ensuring the library is ready for use and secure at all times.
  • Shelve returned materials, keeping the library organized and accessible.
  • Report any facilities or security concerns to the library staff promptly.
  • Answer phones and direct calls to the appropriate staff members or departments.
  • Assist with special projects as needed, such as event setup or research assistance.
  • Maintain a professional and friendly demeanor, representing the library and the university positively.


Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled student at The University of Tulsa, maintaining good academic standing.
  • Reliable, punctual, and detail-oriented, with a strong work ethic.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with patrons and staff.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including familiarity with library systems and databases.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, adapting to a dynamic work environment.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet the library's operational needs.
  • A positive and helpful attitude, eager to assist patrons and contribute to a positive library experience.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handling a high volume of transactions and queries.
  • Commitment to providing professional and courteous customer service at all times.
