Job Description - Student Worker - Peer Tutor


The Peer Tutor provides academic support to fellow students through one-on-one and/or small-group tutoring sessions in an assigned subject area. Peer Tutors help students strengthen their understanding of course material, develop effective study strategies, and build confidence and independence as learners. This position plays a key role in supporting student success and retention across the university.

Subject Areas

Tutors are hired for specific subject areas based on institutional need and student demand, including:

  • Accounting
  • Advanced Mathematics / Math 105 / Math 144
  • Biology
  • Business Management
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Information Systems
  • Digital Media
  • Engineering
  • Marketing
  • Music Theory
  • Physics
  • Statistics
  • Writing Center (writing support across disciplines)


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and/or group tutoring sessions in the assigned subject area(s)
  • Help students understand course concepts, assignments, and study material without completing work on their behalf
  • Assist students in developing effective study habits, time management, and academic strategies
  • Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions (attendance, topics covered, session notes) as required
  • Communicate regularly with the Academic Support Services Coordinator regarding student progress, recurring challenges, or concerns
  • Refer students to additional campus resources (advising, ADA/accommodations, counseling, etc.) as appropriate
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student academic performance and records
  • Attend required tutor training sessions and staff meetings
  • Uphold the academic integrity policies of the university in all tutoring interactions 

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled student in good academic standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, or as otherwise specified)
  • Earned a grade of B or higher in the course(s) or subject area they wish to tutor
  • Faculty recommendation may be required
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patient, approachable, and able to explain concepts clearly to peers with varying skill levels
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to commit to a consistent weekly schedule
  • Prior tutoring or peer mentoring experience preferred but not required
