Job Description - Studio Intern

Interested in a career working with children as an arts educator? If so, we are seeking a dynamic individual with a passion for engaging visitors, energizing environments, and creating a welcoming atmosphere as an intern in The Studio, the museum’s ever-changing maker's space where visitors are inspired to create! This intern works with the program coordinator and Studio facilitators, helping with various activities within the museum's Studio. The intern and program coordinator will work together to create a primary intern project in alignment with the intern’s educational focus, and the Studio’s needs. This project could include creating and facilitating visitor experiences with art materials, real tools, STEM materials and tactile sensory materials.

PAY: $16.00 per hour plus free parking or bus pass

SCHEDULE: Requires 120 hours during the internship session (10-12 hours per week, September - December 2025). Hours are completed on-site.

POSITION SUMMARY

In addition to your primary intern project, below is an estimate of additional responsibilities that may be included in the internship, at the direction and supervision of the program coordinator.

  • Facilitate and/or assist with facilitating Studio activities both on and off-site following Museum best practices and program write-ups.
  • Greet visitors and introduce activities. Provide appropriate interaction with adults and children to encourage playful exploration of materials and experiences.
  • Monitor and maintain Studio materials, and spaces.
  • Demonstrate and model being playful, engaged, welcoming and inclusive of all visitors.
  • Program Preparations: Complete behind-the-scenes tasks as directed such as doing inventory, prepping supplies, collecting, and tabulating program logs, washing smocks, cleaning Studio spaces/supplies, and putting supplies away.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Ability to work well with people in general, and to work effectively and comfortably in a variety of settings – from busy to slow.
  • Ability to follow directions, work independently and complete tasks and communicate in an effective manner.
  • Commitment to continued learning for both personal and team growth.
  • Skill in finding and completing additional tasks when assigned work is completed.
  • Daily interest and enthusiasm for working with children, youth and multi-generational groups.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Minnesota Children's Museum is dedicated to growing a diverse and culturally competent team of highly engaged staff and volunteers. Applicants from diverse populations are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Experience working directly with children ages 1-8, preferably in a learning-focused environment.
  • Education or experience in child education, development or psychology, creative arts, or related field/subject.
  • Customer service experience, preferably in family-oriented environments (interacting with adults and children together).
