Job Description - Substance Use Disorder Professional Trainee (SUDPT) - Intern
This unpaid internship provides students with structured, supervised experience in a clinical treatment setting while completing the requirements for SUDP certification. The internship is designed as a learning experience that benefits the student and does not displace paid staff, in alignment with academic requirements, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidance, and Washington State Department of Health credentialing standards.
All activities are performed under supervision and within the scope outlined in WAC 246-811. Interns must also comply with all applicable confidentiality regulations, including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.
Student Learning Objectives
By the end of the internship, students will be able to:
Conduct supervised intakes, screenings, and assessments (WAC 246-811-010(3)).
Assist in the creation of treatment plans that meet WAC 246-811-010(6) standards.
Demonstrate skills in group facilitation and individual counseling under supervision (WAC 246-811-010(5)).
Apply motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, and harm reduction strategies in client services.
Document services in accordance with WAC 246-811-200.
Exhibit professional behavior, confidentiality, and boundaries consistent with WAC 246-811-240 (code of ethics).
Understand how interdisciplinary teamwork contributes to recovery-oriented care.
Activities & Responsibilities
Participate in weekly supervision (WAC 246-811-049).
Shadow and co-facilitate group counseling sessions.
Complete supervised screenings, assessments, and case notes.
Attend staff meetings, trainings, and case conferences.
Build a professional portfolio documenting progress toward competencies.
Evaluation & Hours
Students will receive a mid-term and final evaluation by their supervisor.
Internship hours will be logged and verified for compliance with WAC 246-811-046 (experience requirements).
Performance will be measured against both academic standards and DOH credentialing expectations.
Qualifications
Current SUDPT credential issued by the Washington State Department of Health (per WAC 246-811-035).
Enrollment in, or completion of, an approved SUDP education program (WAC 246-811-030).
Completion of at least 4 hours of law and ethics training prior to credentialing, per WAC 246-811-030 (effective May 30, 2025).
Strong interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills.
Ability to work with diverse populations and apply trauma-informed care.
Commitment to ethical practice, HIPAA/42 CFR Part 2 compliance, and recovery-oriented services.
