This project will investigate the mechanisms and impacts of membrane aging in
separation systems. Work will focus on characterizing physical, chemical, and
performance changes in polymeric membranes over time under realistic
operating conditions, including exposure to fouling agents, solvents, and/or
cleaning protocols. The student will use experimental techniques (e.g.,
permeability/selectivity testing, imaging, and surface characterization) and data
analysis to investigate degradation pathways and correlate them with
performance changes. The project aims to develop predictive insights and
mitigation strategies to extend membrane lifetime and improve process reliability
in applications such as water treatment, resource recovery, and/or bioseparations.
