Job Description - Summer Teacher's Assistant



Temporary


Description

Schedule: Monday – Friday | 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Position Type: Full-Time | Temporary (May 2026 - August 2026)

Pay: non-negotiable, $13/hour

Position Summary

The Summer Teacher's Assistant works directly with students to help them attain and maintain the skills necessary to achieve maximum functional independence. This role supports and promotes student rights while functioning as an active member of the Interdisciplinary Team.

This position requires adherence to universal precautions and may involve exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially infectious materials. Appropriate protective measures and blood-borne pathogen procedures are required at all times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Student Support & Instruction

  • Provide direct teaching in:
    • Functional academics
    • Communication skills
    • Social interaction
    • Community integration
    • Recreational skills
    • Vocational skills
    • Daily living skills
  • Implement objectives outlined in Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), and other treatment protocols
  • Follow basic principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
  • Use the least restrictive methods to maintain safety
  • Support implementation of Consumer Service Plans
  • Assist students in making choices regarding daily activities
  • Supervise meals and snacks
  • Organize and lead indoor and outdoor activities
  • Transport students to appointments and recreational activities

Documentation & Compliance

  • Collect and record educational and behavioral data
  • Complete required documentation in a timely manner, including:
    • Medication sheets
    • Incident and injury reports
    • Clinical program logs
    • Therapy notes
    • Data collection records
    • Purchase orders and receipts
    • Activity schedules
    • Fire drill documentation
  • Maintain adequate medication supplies
  • Participate in fire drills

Communication & Reporting

  • Communicate effectively with students, caregivers, coworkers, and supervisors
  • Report:
    • Hazardous Conditions to Safety Committee
    • Maintenance needs to be reported to your supervisor
    • Student illness or injury to the nurse
    • Suspected abuse or neglect to the Compliance Officer/Rights Protection Officer
    • Behavioral concerns to the Behavior Team

Health & Safety

  • Adhere to universal precautions and blood-borne pathogen standards
  • Administer medication under nurse/BESC supervision
  • Perform SAMA techniques as needed
  • Perform CPR and abdominal thrust maneuver as needed
  • Respond quickly in emergency or life-threatening situations



Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of college or related experience preferred
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug test
  • Preferred: Minimum 6 months of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities

Required Licenses & Certifications

  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Current SAMA Certification (Provided in training week)
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Reliable Transportation
  • Current automobile insurance

Physical Requirements

Occasionally (1–33%)

  • Lift and carry 40–80 pounds
  • Push wheelchair with student exceeding 200 pounds
  • Run and physically redirect students when necessary

Frequently (34–66%)

  • Perform SAMA techniques with students exceeding 200 pounds

Constantly (67–100%)

  • Fine motor skills (grasping small objects)
  • Standing, walking, bending, squatting, pushing, pulling, lifting
  • Assisting with hygiene, bathing, dressing, and feeding
  • Engaging in recreational and instructional activities Moderate strength and stamina are required, especially in emergency situations.

  • Exposure to blood or bodily fluids
  • Slip and fall hazards
  • Exposure to physical or verbal aggression
  • Muscle strain from lifting, reaching, and twisting
