Overview

The Black Bibliography Project (BBP) aims to revive and transform Descriptive Bibliography—the systematic description of print materials as physical objects—for African American and Black Diaspora literary studies. Our goal is to create a database built on the principles of linked data, a database whose capacities can reveal the dynamic social formations and aesthetic practices that are specific to Black print culture in the U.S. and beyond.


The Black Bibliography Project seeks an employee for Summer 2026 who is interested in supporting the project broadly through research, data entry, and data collection. will work with the Library’s general and special collections, the Black Bibliography Project’s bespoke data model, and authoritative bibliographic spreadsheets. They will be trained, supervised and mentored by the Black Bibliography Project’s Project Manager, Dr. Amanda Awanjo, and Metadata Librarian and Technical Lead, Mara Caelin, and they will gain valuable hands-on experience working with widely used metadata standards.


With oversight by Black Bibliography Project staff via a weekly check in meeting, the intern will contribute to and assist with a variety of tasks within the project, including but not limited to:


● Indexing anthologies of Black writing: remaining 50 Yale anthologies

● Performing name authority work, linking Black writers in our database to authoritative biographical records;

● Developing and improving Wikidata entries on people and place records from the project’s database;

● Working in collaboration with Metadata Librarian and Project Manager to try out new data models;

● Consulting with Library’s metadata experts and other professional staff to resolve any data entry issues;

● Performing research or data entry at the Beinecke Library and possibly in other rare book depositories.

Candidates should be available Monday through Friday up to 15 hours/week for ten weeks. Hours are flexible.

Required Skills and Abilities

1.Experience indexing anthologies.

2. Excellent attention to detail, proofreading skills, computer skills, and willingness to learn new software.
3. Knowledge of history, anthropology, African American and black Diaspora history and literature, humanities fields, data science, or computer programming is desirable but not required.
4. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to maintain research documents according to regulations.
5. Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with clients, families, community partners, and research colleagues.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1. This position requires an applicant who has experience with linked data and Black archival materials, namely anthologies and periodicals.

2. The ideal candidate will have an academic interest in African American and Black Diaspora literature and/or history, library, and information
science, data science, computer science, web technology.

3. Students should have experience and proficiency using the Microsoft Office suite programs and Google Workspace.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Codes and records data. 2. Uses computer terminal to input and retrieve data and generate reports. 3. Creates charts, illustrations and graphic representations of data. 4. Performs clerical functions incidental to research activities.
