POSITION DETAILS

Job Title: Intern
Salary: $15-20/hour

Work Schedule: 15-20 hours work week

  • LPHI offers traditional (M-F, 8 am-5 pm), flexible (for example, M-F 10 am-7pm), and compressed work schedules (for example, M-Th 8 am-7 pm). Schedule details finalized between employee and manager. 

Location: This is a Louisiana-based, hybrid position with occasional (<5%) travel required

  • LPHI maintains an office in New Orleans; hybrid staff must come to the office at least 1-2 times a week. 
  • Employee must reside in Louisiana during the time of employment

Team: The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL)

Reports To: Senior Director, TFL 

Supervises: N/A

Primary Relationships: The PSE Fellow will primarily work with the TFL Senior Director/ Louisiana Cancer Research Center (LCRC) Office of Community Engagement (OCE) Director, TFL Leadership and Goal Area Leads, national/state/community partners and coalition members; will also support activities (as assigned) in LCRC OCE.

ABOUT THE POSITION

A successful candidate will thrive in a team environment, can proactively anticipate, and manage challenges, be a self-starter with strong abilities to manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize appropriately. Day-to-day responsibilities may include managing schedules and meetings, taking meeting minutes, identifying, and prioritizing items for attention, documentation management, and program activity coordination. 

LPHI is headquartered in New Orleans, with employees based throughout the state.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 Program Coordination

  • Coordinate and lead TFL CEU submissions
  • Support coordination of TFL collaborative learning sessions
  • Support the LCRC Office Community Engagement as needed; participate in LCRC OCE post-doc activities

Partnerships & Collaboration

  • Support the identification of writing collaboration/opportunities with stakeholders 
  • Support quality improvement monitoring of TFL Policy activities – working with TFL Policy and Statewide Coordination Sr. Manager

Document and Support Best Practices

  • Research, identify and report on best practices that aid TFL more equitably in achieving its five goals 

Perform other duties as assigned. 

PSE Fellow will work directly with staff and gain experience by: 

  • Conducting research 
  • Participating in and coordinating internal/external partner meetings 
  • Conducting interviews and focus groups with community stakeholders and draft field notes
  • Assisting with synthesizing findings and drafting documents
  • Supporting LPHI staff in writing papers, reports and articles, and dissemination efforts

ABOUT YOU

Position Requirements

  • Current graduate level student in the field of public health, social work, health science, public administration, public policy, education, or closely related field required; bachelor’s or master’s degree in one of the previously mentioned fields. 
  • 2+ years of relevant health promotion/prevention and control and/or health equity professional experience. 
  • Ability to demonstrate effective professional and interpersonal relationship experiences and principles. 
  • Knowledge of public health and social issues in Louisiana or southern states and experience working on health or health-related programs preferred.
  • Strong commitment to LPHI’s mission and values and to centering diversity, equity, and inclusion in executing key responsibilities. 


Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities 

  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Well-organized, self-directed, and able to complete multiple tasks in a timely and efficient manner
  • Ability to learn new subject areas quickly
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications 
  • A commitment to actively working in alignment with public health with other social, racial, and economic justice movements
  • Ability to function independently and as a team member

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods (sitting or standing). 
  • Ability to operate a keyboard with repetitive motion. 
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal team members. 

Working Conditions:

  • This position is based in an office or home office setting.
  • Occasional travel may be required for training or meetings.
  • Usual workday hours or flexible schedules can be considered.
