Position: Urban Landscape Internship 

 

Department: Urban Landscape

 

Employment Status: Temporary   

 

Schedule: 40 hours per week for 12 weeks. Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Compensation: $15.00/hour 

 POSITION SUMMARY 

  

Position Summary Horticulturist Intern:

Works with Urban Landscape project site volunteers & neighborhood associations as needed. Works to promote native, non-invasive species. Employs physical techniques to minimize herbicide & power tool use. Performs manual tasks including cutting, pruning, and removing brush, scrubs, and small trees. Assists in designing and maintaining flower beds, downtown baskets, and containers.

Position Summary Landscape Architecture Intern:

The student will have the opportunity to review past and current municipal landscape design projects. Creation of new designs for small scale projects on public grounds will be presented to the City’s Urban Landscape Commission. Under the supervision of the Urban Landscape Director the Landscape Architecture Intern will perform manual tasks including cutting, trimming, and removing brush, shrubs, and trees, picking up litter, watering and fertilizing plant materials and trees. The intern will learn about the federal, state and local government relations as they relate to the operations of the City. 

Position Summary Urban Forestry Intern: 

Under the supervision of the Urban Landscape Director the Urban Forestry Intern will perform manual tasks including planting, watering, pruning, mulching, and the care of city trees. The Intern will learn about the federal, state and local government relations as they relate to the operations of the City. 

     

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - KNOWLEDGE – SKILLS - ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the organization and programs of the City of Morgantown.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and an ability to operate job related equipment, motor vehicles, and tools properly and safely.
  • Demonstrates an ability to work under general supervision to prioritize work; meet deadlines; define and evaluate project and program results; and plan and implement assignments.
  • Demonstrates an ability to effectively listen, speak, write, and interact tactfully in both a work and public setting.        Consistently follows oral and written instructions from supervisors. 
  • Maintains a safe, efficient work environment by cleaning, organizing, and sanitizing work areas including storage and office spaces.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local government relationships as they relate to the mission and operations of the city.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work in an office environment, outdoors, or in work trucks. 
  • Work requires sitting, standing, and walking. 
  • Daily conditions encountered include odors, fumes, dust, dirt, noise. Other conditions vary with precipitation and seasonal changes.
  • Follows horticulture or landscape industry standard safety practices involving ergonomics, equipment, and personal protection equipment.
  • Must have the ability to lift 50 lbs., with assistance.

 

USE OF TECHNOLOGY & EQUIPMENT

 

  • Position has some basic use of computers for   data entry, and some use of the telephone, copier, etc.
  • Equipment that may be used on a regular basis includes but is not limited to weed eaters, ladders, shovels, watering trucks, and assorted hand tools. 

 

CONTACT & SUPERVISION

 

  • Position involves frequent internal and external contact, but generally on routine matters such as furnishing or obtaining information.
  • Reports to the Urban Landscape Director.

Requirements

     

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Education:   

  • High school graduate or equivalent. 
  • Must be currently enrolled in a Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, or Urban Forestry programs. 

 

Certification/License:

  • Valid Driver’s License

 

Experience:

  • At least 1 year of experience in manual labor.   

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

· One year of experience in horticultural   field or landscape architecture or forestry field.
