Job Description - Youth Engagement Coordinator

Position Summary: 


The Summer Youth Engagement Coordinator (AmeriCorps Member) supports the delivery of high-quality, inclusive summer programming by helping create a positive, structured, and engaging environment for youth. This role focuses on social-emotional learning (SEL), behavior support, and direct youth engagement.This position serves as an on-site support role—helping staff respond to student needs, maintain strong program culture, and ensure all youth remain meaningfully engaged. This role does not supervise staff but acts as a key support in maintaining program quality and consistency.

Founded in 2002, Kid Power is a community-rooted nonprofit that empowers over 1,000 youth annually across Washington, DC. With an annual budget of $2.2 million, our evidence-based programs focus on academic confidence, social-emotional wellness, and civic leadership. We value collaboration, community-building, and youth voice in everything we do.



Schedule: This full-time service position requires 40 hours per week (generally Monday–Friday, 10 AM – 6 PM). To effectively engage with our community, evening and occasional weekend hours are essential. Service may take place at Kid Power’s offices, partner schools, and community locations. This is a short term role ending August 31, 2026.



Key Responsibilities:


AmeriCorps Members will serve in one or more of the following areas:



Program Preparation (Pre-Summer)



  • Assist with preparation of SEL-focused lessons and materials

  • Support organization of curriculum materials and program supplies

  • Participate in training and onboarding for summer programming



During Summer Program



  • Provide direct support to youth during programming, helping ensure a safe and inclusive environment

  • Assist with facilitating activities, including small group or supplemental (“push-in/pull-out”) support as needed

  • Support implementation of behavior management strategies aligned with program values

  • Assist in developing and reinforcing behavior support plans

  • Serve as an additional layer of support (“second line of support”) when challenges arise

  • Help de-escalate situations and maintain a calm, consistent environment

  • Support staff in keeping youth engaged and participating in programming



Program Support & Collaboration



  • Collaborate with staff to uphold a positive program culture

  • Communicate observations and concerns to senior staff in a timely manner

  • Support continuity and structure during transitions and throughout the day



Skills & Qualifications



  • Experience working with youth (required), ideally in elementary or similar settings

  • Experience working in urban communities (required)

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

  • Ability to remain calm, consistent, and responsive in dynamic environments

  • Commitment to equity and inclusive practices

  • Reliable and adaptable with a strong sense of responsibility



Preferred (not required):



  • Experience with social-emotional learning frameworks (e.g., Responsive Classroom, restorative practices)

  • Experience supporting youth with disabilities (IEPs/504 plans)

  • Training in de-escalation or behavior management strategies

  • $2,000/month Stipend, payroll twice per month
