Job Description - Environmental Sustainability Intern

Join the Office of Regional Development to design and implement a communication strategy and outreach plan to highlight the County’s sustainability efforts and direct the public to resources and information.

 

The Office of Regional Development works collaboratively with state and local governments, businesses, and community organizations to support healthy, vibrant, and accessible communities for all Salt Lake County residents. The divisions within the Office of Regional Development highlight the breadth of our programs. These divisions include:

  • Economic Development
  • Housing & Community Development
  • Regional Planning & Transportation
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Canyons Management

We are seeking applicants with an interest in regional planning and sustainability, strong design skills, ability to organize information in a cohesive manner to communicate programming to a general audience. You will participate in a Communications Strategy cohort with the Urban Sustainability Directors Network, and collaborating with our Environmental Sustainability Manager, you will be vital in the preliminary research about best practices of sustainability storytelling, strategy design, implementation of an outreach plan specifically for Environmental Sustainability! Responsibilities may include conducting research on successful sustainability communication strategies from across the nation; collaborating with communication professionals across the County and nation; organizing important sustainability events and create an events calendar for media campaigns; and developing long-term communications strategy and outreach plan.

Work is primarily Monday through Friday with flexible hours to accommodate a school schedule. The primary work location will be the Salt Lake County Government Center. Telework is allowed up to three days per week, although we highly recommend more time in the office for networking and activities with the internship cohort.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor OR Graduate program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Gather, analyze, and interpret communication research and/or strategies.
  • Prepare concise reports and presentations to explain findings.
  • Collaborate with other County agencies to highlight their work.
  • Deliver briefings on communications strategies.
  • Participate in professional development programs offered by Intern Program

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Understanding of the principles and functions of local government.
  • Ability to complete tasks under deadlines.
  • Curiosity, creativity, adaptability, and attention to detail.
  • Be a team player who also excels as an individual contributor.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience or coursework in environmental sustainability, communications, public policy, or a related field.
  • Interest in sustainability work in the public sector.

PAY: $15.00/hour for 205 hours.

START DATE: The internship begins May 20, 2024, and ends August 2, 2024

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Intern may work remotely or from the Salt Lake County Government Center. They will be provided a computer and an email account. Intern may be asked to attend meetings off-site, at other government facilities, and in the community . Intern may be sitting for long periods of time at a computer.

PAID INTERN POSITIONS:

 

An “At Will”, FLSA non-exempt employee who is not eligible for County benefits and who must work an average of 29 hours or less per week or an average of 129 hours or less per month.

  • Are not eligible for County benefits except as otherwise provided for by policy.
  • Are not considered merit employees.
  • Are "at will" employees who may be terminated for any reason, without notice, and without a pre-termination hearing.
