Job Description - Market research analyst

Position Overview The KU School of Business Management and Entrepreneurship Area has coordinated with BetterSpec to provide a business student internship opportunity as a Market Research Analyst. The Market Research Analyst will gain hands-on experience in market research, estimating market size, creating financial projections, and delivering a comprehensive presentation. The position will contribute to strategic decision-making processes by providing valuable insights into market trends, potential opportunities, and financial viability. This will be an iterative process where additional work may be suited based on initial findings. This is a part-time position, up to 10 hours per week, until a minimum of 120 hours is achieved. This position will start late March and continue until the end of the Fall 2024 semester. Due to the collaborative position, the Market Research Analyst position will be remote and will report to both the Director of Entrepreneurship Co-Curricular Programs at the University of Kansas School of Business and the Entrepreneur in Residence at KU Medical Center. This position is contingent on funding. BetterSpec, an early-stage start-up company, is creating next-generation speculum used in women's exams for pelvic health, pregnancy, and diagnosing cervical cancer. Job Description The Market Research Analyst position will (a) conduct market research, (b) determine estimated market size, (c) develop financial projections, (d) prepare a presentation, and (e) deliver a final presentation. Duties include, but are not limited to: Market Research

  • Conduct primary and secondary research to gather information on industry trends, customer preferences, and competitor analysis.
  • Utilize online databases, industry reports, surveys, and interviews to collect data.
  • Analyze market trends, customer demographics, and purchasing behaviors.
  • Document findings and present preliminary insights to the team for feedback.
Market Size
  • Apply acquired knowledge to estimate the total addressable market (TAM) and serviceable available market (SAM).
  • Utilize various methodologies such as bottom-up and top-down.
  • Validate assumptions and refine market size estimates based on feedback and additional research.
  • Prepare a comprehensive report outlining the methodology used and the final market size estimates.
Financial Projections
  • Develop financial models to forecast revenue, expenses, and investment needs.
  • Incorporate market research findings and market size estimates into the financial projections.
  • Present the financial projections to stakeholders and solicit feedback for refinement.
Presentation Preparation
  • Synthesize research findings, market analysis, and financial projections into a compelling narrative.
  • Create a visually engaging presentation using PowerPoint or other presentation tools.
  • Practice delivery of the presentation to enhance communication and presentation skills.
  • Solicit feedback from mentors and peers to refine the presentation content and delivery.
Final Presentation and Wrap-Up
  • Deliver the final presentation to key stakeholders, including the Innovator Team and Digital Health Co/Lab.
  • Articulate key findings, insights, and recommendations based on the research and analysis conducted.
  • Address questions and engage in discussions to clarify any aspects of the presentation.
  • Reflect on the internship experience, lessons learned, and areas for future growth.
  • Prepare a comprehensive report summarizing the internship activities, achievements, and recommendations for the company's future strategies.
Required Qualifications
  • Must be a KU student enrolled in at least 6 credit hours (during spring and fall semesters).
  • Demonstrated evidence of coachability, time management, and/or self-leadership skills based on application materials.
  • Demonstrated evidence of creativity, based on application materials.
  • Evidence of strong communication skills.
During the semester term of the appointment, the KU student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Excel spreadsheets.
