Job Description - Registered Nurse- Part-Time

Premier non-profit is seeking a Part-Time School Registered Nurse for one of its vastly growing programs. Pathways Strategic Teaching Center is a year- round comprehensive education and treatment program, servicing children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other related disorders. Pathways is committed to utilizing scientifically validated teaching methodologies in improving the lives of individuals with ASD and their families. Pathways education and treatment strategies are based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. Individually tailored curricula address speech and language, pre-academic and academic skills, daily living and self-care skills, play and social skills, vocational skills, and assessment & treatment of challenging behavior.

The School Registered Nurse will be responsible for:

  • Protecting the rights and dignities of individuals with developmental disabilities and extending these rights and dignities to family members or guardians
  • Participating in clinical team meetings
  • Providing health services to facilitate students’ optimal physical, mental, emotional, and social growth and development in a school setting
  • Evaluating the physical conditions of students and referring students to appropriate resources as needed
  • Providing first aid care and medically prescribed services
  • Assessing injuries of staff and children; treating, documenting, and providing referrals for treatment as needed
  • Responsible for medication administration or treatments as well as G-Tube feedings and training on this process when necessary
  • Consulting with PCP regarding medications and management of health regimens for children with special health care needs
  • Providing and coordinating services (i.e. dental screenings, vision, hearing, etc.) as required by RI state school health regulations
  • Developing Individual and Emergency Health Care Plans for all children with special health care needs including allergies
  • Attending IEPs of children with IHCPs and EHCPs to review and update plans
  • Assessing and teaching parents and staff about illnesses, medications, and use of emergency medications
  • Reviewing, maintaining, and updating health records of children and staff
  • Maintaining security of school health supplies and ordering medical supplies as needed
  • Managing communicable disease identification and notifications
  • Updating/developing policies and procedures and interpreting regulations, related to school health
  • Monitoring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and policies
  • Completing all necessary requests from RI DOH and RIDE (i.e. school health surveys, immunization requests, etc.)
  • Providing staff development on health-related topics as well as participating in orientations, clinical team meetings, and workshops
  • Collaborating with colleges and universities for nursing interns and mentoring students
  • Obtaining annual school physician contract
  • Assisting with crisis management
  • Arranging coverage for nursing and allied services when necessary
  • Performing other duties and job assignments as required by the Coordinator of Health Services or Director

Education, Qualifications, and Skills:

  • Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island and holds an unrestricted license
  • Certified in CPR or obtain certification
  • Knowledge of children with autism & related disorders and applied behavior analysis preferred
  • Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment
  • Knowledge of child growth and development
  • Experience with crisis management
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices underlying professional nursing and school health
  • Knowledge of state and local laws relating to health and social issues
  • Valid driver’s license, Automobile insurance, and Safe driving record
