Department Information



Career Exploration and Student Employment provides career planning, programming, and career coaching to meet the unique needs of the 3,000 students in Undergraduate Education, specifically students in pre-business, exploratory, pre-nursing, and pre-social work. Career Exploration also provides career programming to campus offices not affiliated with a School. Student Employment helps all students at IU, both undergraduate and graduate, find part-time jobs on-campus and off-campus. The Assistant Director provides expert guidance and innovative career coaching to undergraduate students and student groups throughout the IU campus. Through a variety of self-assessment tools and career coaching, the Assistant Director acknowledges students where they are and assists them in career exploration and career decision making. Aids in helping students identify part-time jobs, internships, and professional shadowing opportunities. Develops new programming and events to support the needs of students served by Career Exploration and Student Employment. Completes other Center-wide responsibilities such as data tracking, assessment and webpage editing.

Job Summary



Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Meets 1-on-1 with undergraduate students for 20-minute drop-in sessions and 1-hour appointments.
  • Helps students identify, understand, and meet their long-term career goals by focusing on individual student success strategies.
  • Assists students on a broad range of topics including career planning, resume and cover letter creation, and part-time job and internship search strategies.
  • Maintains up-to-date online career resources such as the Career Guides.
  • Provides referrals to additional resources as needed.
  • Creative and flexible regarding coaching strategies.
  • Must work effectively with diverse populations, international students, veterans, rural students and non-traditional students.
  • Collaborates with Associate Directors¿ area teams to create opportunities for students to explore career fields, participate in job shadowing, conduct informational interviews, and develop networking experiences with alumni, faculty and employers. Develops multiple career-related events, workshops and classroom presentations each semester on topics related to the career exploration process, part-time job search, internship search strategies and experiential education.
  • Participates in summer programming including First Year Experience Orientation/Program (NSO), Groups Scholars Program, and 21st Century Scholars. Develops new programming to support specific student population needs. Supports student organizations and scholarship programs by collaborating with relevant student and staff leaders to provide tailored career programming and workshops.
  • Collaborates with campus departments and Bloomington employers to market the benefits of participating in experiential learning events and job fairs: represents office on the day of the event; collaborates with all stakeholders; plans and executes marketing strategies; arranges facilities and catering; and schedules staff for event day.
  • Contributes and supports initiatives, best practices, programs and innovations in career exploration that improve efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery. Represents Career
  • Exploration and Student Employment at local, state and professional conferences.

General Responsibilities

  • Provides day-to-day operational management of career services staff.
  • Establishes short-term operational objectives.
  • Identifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve processes and/or operational efficiency.
  • Analyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; establishes work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as needed.
  • Ensures adequate staffing and effective scheduling; participates and informs employment decisions for assigned staff.
  • Provides direct supervision and oversight of assigned staff and activities; impacts, and is held accountable for, the performance of team and/or assigned staff.
  • Ensures and provides training to assigned staff to improve career services operations; researches and identifies development opportunities for assigned staff.
  • Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry career services standards, best practices, and emerging technology; keeps next-level leader(s) informed of trends as well as significant problems.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in business, counseling, or related field

Preferred

  • Master's degree in related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years in career services, business, human resources, counseling, or related field

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

  • Professional certifications for counseling or career counseling

Working Conditions / Demands



This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
