Job Duties

We are seeking individuals interested in joining our Salem District Structure & Bridge Team working on one of our Bridge Crews in Bedford, Christiansburg, Ironto, Hillsville, Martinsville and Salem locations. We are looking for individuals with skills in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, welding, and equipment operation (e.g. dump truck, loader, backhoe) and ability to perform manual labor. As a member of the bridge maintenance team, you will:
• respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
• operate light to medium-duty equipment to perform bridge maintenance and construction related tasks
• form footers, abutments, wing walls, and place and finish concrete
• erect steel beam structures, install timber and concrete bridge decks
• complete pre-trip inspections, demonstrate proper jobsite protection techniques Position requires physically demanding labor over, in, and around water from boats and scaffolding at various heights and in harsh weather conditions. VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is key to fulfilling this agency requirement, and this position will be called upon to work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations such as inclement weather, flooding, and/or traffic incidents. Minimum Qualifications

• knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials, and safety practices
• experience in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding
• able to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
• skill using and maintaining light to medium duty equipment, hand and power tools
• able to work at heights, over and in water, in heavy traffic and under adverse conditions
• able to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts

Additional Considerations

• valid certified crane operator with appropriate endorsements
• experience in bridge maintenance and construction
• experience fabricating or welding steel components
• skilled in carpentry, building forms, concrete placement and finishing
