Job Description - Associate Research Scientist Part-Time Non-Exempt

Supervisor : Dr. David R. Kanter () in the Dept. of Environmental Studies Vacancy : Associate Research Scientist to help organize workshop and lead literature review focused on climate action on land. Job Summary : The NYU Department of Environmental Studies is seeking an Associate Research Scientist for a project investigating climate action on land. Achieving ambitious climate targets will require widespread climate change mitigation across global land systems over the 21st century. Given substantial projected demand for mitigation, land-based climate mitigation actions will increasingly interact, competing for land or complementing one another on the same land. Landholder decision-making in the face of these interactions will determine the degree to which land systems mitigate climate change. To inform policy approaches that minimize climate change, a full understanding of these interactions, as well as the social factors that influence landholder adoption of mitigation actions, is critically important. This project seeks, therefore, to investigate the implications of climate action on land, via a series of research and collaborative activities. The Associate Research Scientist will have two major tasks: 1) Lead the organization of a workshop at the end of August 2024 with 15-20 of the world's leading scientists and stakeholders working on this topic; 2) Conduct a literature review examining the extent to which the existing scientific literature has assessed how different climate actions are evaluated on the same parcel of land. Position expectations : The successful candidate will have 2 years of experience in the data sciences and project management, with a particular focus on conducting literature reviews and  organizing the logistical and substantive details of scientific workshops. The successful candidate is expected to display high levels of: responsiveness, timeliness, and respectfulness in communications and work (sometimes according to deadlines), high degree of organization that enable collaboration, and attention to detail (e.g. careful construction of plots; readability of produced material; clear annotations; etc.). Occasional communications and correspondences with project-specific collaborators and regular (e.g. weekly) meetings with PI Kanter to discuss progress and research needs will also be required. The appointment is for Summer 2024 (approximately June 15th - September 15th), with the possibility of extension into Fall 2024. The successful candidate will be based in the growing Dept. of Environmental Studies at NYU's Washington Square campus in New York City. The appointment will provide ample opportunity to engage with the highly interdisciplinary department faculty, including natural and social science dimensions. The pay rate is $28.25/hour, not to exceed 10 hours per week. In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly pay range for this position is $26-$28.25/hour commensurate with experience. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Master's degree minimum, with major course work in the above-described relevant areas
