SUMMARY OF ROLE

 

Under the supervision of the Access Services Manager, the Access Services Materials Assistant is responsible for facilitating superior library service to patrons by ensuring that library materials are readily available for patrons to browse and access. This position acts as a flexible partner to all staff to enhance the patron experience. Specific responsibilities and functions will be assigned by the Access Services Manager based on experience, skills and specific needs of the library.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES  

  • Ensure materials are sorted and filed in correct location and readily available for browsing or pick-up and that collections appear clean and tidy 
  • Manage materials to ensure they are in good condition and readily available to customers through tasks such as emptying book drop, checking in, sorting, shelving, shelf-reading, and searching for items on lists as assigned  
  • Assist patrons with basic library tasks such as self-checkout and reserving and picking up materials 
  • Answer directional questions and respond to or redirect patron questions about programs and services. Promote library resources during interaction with patrons  
  • Ensure that public areas of library are tidy and that displays are visually appealing 
  • Receive and prepare incoming library materials to be available to patrons • May assist with other programs, services and promotions at the library or in the community 
  • Contribute to the continual improvement of services across the library by being flexible to learn and perform new responsibilities. Share ideas to resolve problems or create an opportunity for service.
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned  

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS  

  • Ability to accurately read material labels in order to sort and file alphabetically and numerically using the principles of the Dewey Decimal System 
  • Attention to detail 
  • Basic skill in operating a computer to clock in and out, perform required trainings and check email regularly
  • Problem solving skills to assist in determining task prioritization and find timely solutions
  • Ability to learn to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public 

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1 year of high school or equivalent experience
  • Eligible to legally work after 7:00pm
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and self-directed learning
  • Ability to remain calm and resolve issues in challenging situations
  • Requires access to reliable transportation

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Standard office environment
  • Near constant walking, bending and stretching
  • Maneuver carts loaded up to 100 pounds.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Pull to open/ push to close overhead door
  • This position may require regular evening and weekend hours
