Accounting Technician – Part Time
Job Type: Part Time, non-benefited
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Pay: $23 – $26 (depending on experience)
Definition:
Under direct supervision of the City Treasurer or Finance Director (as is appropriate to the work function), performs a variety of payroll and accounting tasks.
Payroll and Accounting Tasks:
- Sets up new employee information in the Payroll module.
- Also enters employee personnel information changes (i.e. salary, benefits, deductions, job status modifications) into the appropriate computer modules.
- Process bi-weekly payroll accurately and on schedule, including wage calculations, deductions, and benefits.
- Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Prepare payroll related journal entries.
- Collaborate with HR and management to resolve payroll discrepancies and answer employee questions.
- Support audits by preparing necessary documentation and reports.
- Strong understanding of payroll laws, tax regulations, and accounting principles.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Strong communication skills and collaborative mindset.
- Assist with the year-end payroll activities, including W-2 preparation and distribution.
- And performs other assigned functions.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred
- Two+ years' work performing payroll and accounting activities.
o Education may be substituted for experience on a one-to-one basis.
- Working knowledge of laws, regulations, and practices governing payroll.
o Experience with benefits and payroll taxes is preferred.
- Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to work, including word processing and spreadsheet, office productivity, and specialized software applications.
o Experience with Time Clock Plus and Caselle a plus.
Skills:
- Basic technical accounting related to municipal finance and accounting.
- Ability to quickly assimilate information sufficient to fill out and submit established forms, documents, and records.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Work Environment:
The incumbent of the position performs in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing. Rapid work speed required to perform keyboard operations. Common eye, hand, finger, leg and foot dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discernment and some guided problem solving.
