Job Summary:
The Action Quest Camp Director will oversee our teen camp for campers in Grades 5-8. The Camp Director will supervise camp staff, interact with campers, and coordinate parental communication. This position ensures that the summer camp's daily operations and logistics are organized and safe, creating a welcoming environment for campers to learn and grow.
Camp Dates:
- Open House: June 4
- Camp Staff Training: June 12-13
- Camp Dates: June 16 - August 8
- Mandatory Dates: June 4, 12, & 13, July 4 & 31, August 1 & 8
Qualifications:
- Camp Directors must be 18 years of age or older.
- Previous experience in a camp setting required.
- A valid Illinois Driver's License is required
- Must possess CPR/AED/ First Aid Certification or willing to obtain within one month of hire.
- The passing of the Glencoe Park District Vehicle Training
- All employees must pass a criminal background check, which the Glencoe Park District will cover.
Required Knowledge:
A knowledge of the philosophy of public recreation and the ability to communicate this to others is required, as well as a proven technical knowledge of the content of the position. Must be able to create age-appropriate lesson plans and activities for campers. Must have a strong understanding of safety and the ability to keep participants safe at all times.
Required Skills:
Must be dependable and flexible, with good safety awareness and sound judgment. Workers must be able to understand and follow rules and instructions. Must have the ability to read, write, and organize material. Must have strong communication skills to direct staff and provide parents and campers with the highest standard of customer service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the entire camp operation daily, including on-site activities, field trip logistics, safety, and camper behavior management.
- Attend all in-service training, staff meetings, and safety sessions when scheduled. Conduct daily counselor meetings specific to the camp assigned to
- Review accidents/incidents, safety-related matters, and daily schedule
- Work with staff members cooperatively, day-to-day supervision of camp counselors within the camp
- Possess and practice appropriate First Aid/Emergency Response skills.
- Plan and prepare program necessities, including resource materials and supplies.
- Continually evaluate the camp program, including mid and post-season evaluations of camp staff.
- Provide a safe, friendly environment for staff and campers.
- Report and document all incidents relating to health, safety, and loss control policies and procedures immediately to the Program Manager.
- Ensure compliance with the District's safety, health, and loss control policies and procedures.
- Maintain a cordial and resourceful relationship with the participants' parents/guardians.
- Keep written records and prepare forms as necessary.
- Maintain effective communication with the Program Manager, Director of Recreation, parents, counselors, and program participants.
- Attend all special program sessions, such as special events, overnights, and extended trips.
- Work with C.I.T. Director in the supervision and guidance of C.I.T.'s daily.
- Always conduct oneself as a representative of the Glencoe Park District and promote Park District functions.
- Oversee the planning, organization, and supervision of group activities.
- Understand, accept, and follow the philosophy and operational goals and objectives of the camp and Glencoe Park District.
- Assist co-workers in any way possible to develop a spirit of cooperation.
- Communicate with your supervisor concerning problems, questions, or suggestions.
- Encourage social and emotional growth in each camper.
- Be responsible for the health, safety, and personal well-being of campers.
- Facilitate camper skill development, activity participation, and social interaction with others.
- You must arrive at work no less than 30 minutes before the start of camp and leave camp no earlier than 15 minutes after camp concludes.
- Always conduct yourself as a representative of the Glencoe Park District and promote Park District functions.
- Attend all special events, overnights, trips, and meetings as assigned.
- Maintain a working knowledge of all general and departmentalâÂÂÂÂspecific safety rules.
- Immediately report all accidents and unsafe conditions to the Program Manager, and complete and submit accident forms before the end of the day on which the accident occurred.
- Cooperate and assist in the investigation of accidents.
- Attend all required safety programs and inâÂÂÂÂservice education meetings.
- Ensure camp area(s) and the general facility are neat and orderly.
- Dress appropriately for the position: gym shoes, camp shirt, district-provided whistle shorts or pants; swimsuits should be one piece, no sandals or flip-flops.
- Keep campsite, supplies, and equipment neat and in good condition and report broken equipment and unsafe conditions immediately to the Program Manager.
- Clean work area and campgrounds before leaving each day.
- Provide coverage for before and after care as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by the Program Manager and Director of Recreation.
Pay Scale:
This is a seasonal part-time, non-exempt (hourly) position. The intended starting pay for this position is $22 per hour, with a full pay scale ranging from $22 per hour to $30 per hour.
Final compensation will be determined in good faith based on an evaluation of the candidate's qualifications, experience, and the recommendation of the Assistant Director of Recreation and Facilities, or the Deputy Director/Director of Recreation and Facilities.
