Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Action Quest Camp Director is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, safety, and overall experience of campers and staff within the Glencoe Park District’s Action Quest Camp. This position provides leadership to counselors, ensures high-quality program delivery, and maintains a positive, inclusive, and engaging environment for campers in Grades 5–9. The Camp Director plays a key role in planning, communication, supervision, and problem-solving throughout the camp season.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Previous experience in camp leadership, youth programming, or recreation management required.
- CPR/AED/First Aid certification required or must be obtained within one month of hire.
- Must pass a criminal background check, paid for by the Glencoe Park District.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills required.
Required Knowledge:
- Understanding of youth development principles and the philosophy of public recreation
- Strong working knowledge of camp operations, activity planning, and risk-management practices
- Ability to clearly communicate expectations, policies, and procedures to staff, campers, and families
Required Skills:
The Camp Director must demonstrate:
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to train, support, and motivate staff
- Dependable and flexible, with sound judgment and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities
- Effective problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee all aspects of daily camp operations, ensuring a safe, organized, and engaging environment.
- Lead, train, supervise, and evaluate counselors and support staff.
- Develop weekly schedules, activity plans, and program materials in collaboration with staff.
- Foster a positive camp culture that supports social, emotional, and physical development of campers.
- Communicate regularly with parents, caregivers, and the Recreation team.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for camper concerns, behavioral issues, and staff support.
- Ensure all staff follow camp policies, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
- Maintain accurate records, attendance, incident reports, and required documentation.
- Coordinate logistics for special events, trips, overnights, and before/after-care coverage.
- Ensure that camp spaces, supplies, and equipment remain clean, organized, and well-maintained.
- Hold staff accountable for professional conduct, punctuality, and program quality.
- Manage conflicts, address concerns proactively, and elevate issues to supervisors when appropriate.
- Attend required trainings, meetings, and safety programs.
- Represent the Glencoe Park District in a professional and positive manner at all times.
- Other duties as assigned by the Program Manager, and Director of Recreation and Facilities.
Hours:
Due to the nature of park district programming, evening, weekend, and some holiday hours are to be expected; however, traditional camp hours will take place between 8 AM and 4 PM.
Pay Scale:
The intended starting pay for this position is $22 per hour, with a full pay scale ranging from $22 per hour to $24 per hour
Final compensation will be determined in good faith based on an evaluation of the candidate's qualifications, experience, and the recommendation of the Assistant Director of Recreation and Facilities, or the Deputy Director/Director of Recreation and Facilities.
