Founded in 1905 and serving nearly 1,000 day and boarding students from 28 states and 19 countries, McCallie is one of the country’s premier independent schools and a national leader in educating boys in grades 6-12. McCallie takes an expansive view of education, seeking to form the whole boy. In his journey to manhood, McCallie comes alongside the student and supports his mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional development.
McCallie seeks a dynamic, innovative, student-centered research scientist to help support and strengthen emerging student interest in scientific research at McCallie School. McCallie has a $15 million, 40,000 square foot science building with state of the art technology, science labs, and research spaces, including a tissue culture lab, innovation maker-space, and engineering lab. The school has built an exceedingly strong and successful research program, with a particular strength in molecular biology.
This is a 10-month, part-time position (approximately 20-24 hours per week). It is considered exempt under the FLSA, and it is not eligible for benefits.
Key Responsibilities:
Work with students to design and support research projects, especially in the molecular biology and cell culture fields.
Demonstrate passion for mentoring students as they design unique and relevant projects which they pursue with guidance.
Support students to analyze data, run statistical analysis and troubleshoot problems.
Work cooperatively and flexibly within a strong research program.
Requirements
Applicant must possess:
a Masters degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics or a related field;
hands-on experience in developing research ideas through internships, academic projects, or work experience; and
deep understanding of, support for, and desire to live out McCallie’s mission for the good of McCallie boys - including both the school’s commitment to character development and the ideals of honor, truth, and duty and the school’s Christian foundation and Judeo-Christian heritage.
Additional qualifications or characteristics desired, but not required, include:
experience with various molecular biology techniques, including cell culture, microscopy, cloning, protein purification, and/or microbiology;
familiarity with presenting research at conferences either verbally or in writing;
involvement in various levels of student science research, from high school to college; or
