Description

Organization: Boys and Girls Clubs of San Leandro
Location: Clubhouse
Department: Programming

Reports to: Grant Compliance & Partnership Manager

Direct Reports: None
Exempt Status: Non-Exempt

Position Type: Part-Time, On-Site

Compensation: $18-$27

Position Overview:

The After-School Program Van Driver is responsible for safely transporting Club members, ages 4 to 18, to and from BGCSL program sites, schools, and community locations. The Driver plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of youth while maintaining a positive and professional relationship with families and staff. This position requires a responsible, reliable, and safety-conscious individual who enjoys working with youth in a supportive environment.

Our Values in Action:

  1. Transformative Leadership: We aspire to transform possibilities into probabilities. By embodying emotional intelligence, vulnerability, and empathy, we foster positive change with humility, authenticity, and continuous self-improvement. What that looks like in this role: Greeting each member with warmth, empathy, and respect. Setting a positive tone and creating a sense of belonging. Modeling emotional intelligence by remaining calm and patient in challenging situations. Communicating effectively to support youth and families. Continuously seeking ways to improve safety practices and youth engagement. Fostering trust and connection.
  2. Resilience: We approach every situation with a growth mindset, demonstrating flexibility and courage, reframing challenges as opportunities. We acknowledge our current state, embrace change, and adapt as needed, maintaining a solutions-oriented approach throughout our growth journey. What that looks like in this role: Flexibility and quick problem-solving—whether dealing with traffic delays, route changes, or a youth having a tough day. Staying adaptable, maintaining a calm and solutions-oriented mindset no matter the circumstance. Recognizing that challenges on the road or within interactions are opportunities to demonstrate patience, courage, and professionalism. Ensuring youth feel safe and cared for, regardless of unexpected changes.
  3. Youth Centered Approach: Every organizational action or maneuver is designed to directly impact and benefit the youth we serve. We value and prioritize the youth perspective, making decisions with a focus on their needs and well-being, rather than adult convenience. What that looks like in this role: Prioritizing the safety, comfort, and emotional well-being of every youth during transportation. Maintaining a clean, safe van environment, following strict safety protocols, and treating youth with dignity and respect. Ensuring every young person feels valued, heard, and secure from the moment they step on the van until they arrive at their destination. Adjusting your approach to meet their needs, recognizing that your role plays an essential part in their overall Club experience.

Essential Functions:

Safe & Reliable Transportation: Operate a BGCSL van to transport youth between schools, Club sites, and field trip locations while maintaining a punctual schedule for pickups and drop-offs.

Youth Safety & Supervision: Ensure the safety of all youth passengers by following traffic laws, enforcing seat belt use, and assisting students—including those with special needs—with safe boarding and exiting.

Behavior Management & Positive Environment: Manage youth behavior during transportation, handling conflicts respectfully to maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.

Emergency Preparedness & Response: Be prepared to respond to emergencies, including accidents, breakdowns, or medical incidents involving youth passengers, following established safety protocols.

Vehicle Maintenance & Inspections: Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections daily to ensure vehicle safety, report maintenance needs promptly and keep the van clean and fueled.

Collaboration with Program Staff: Coordinate with BGCSL staff to ensure smooth transitions between transportation and program activities, supporting overall program operations.

Communication & Relationship Building: Demonstrate positive and respectful communication with youth, families, and staff while reinforcing BGCSL policies and ensuring the well-being of all members.

Program Support & Special Events: Assist with supervision of youth at program sites and field trips as needed, including participation in occasional Saturday events or field trips.

BGCSL Competencies:

Communication & Listening

Exhibiting clear, empathetic, and effective communication skills while actively listening to others to build trust and understanding.

Cultural Competency

Promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and respect for all communities served.
