Job Description - Band Teacher (Part Time, After School, In-Person)

Schedule: Typically 1 hour per week for 10 weeks (after school); exact days/times vary by assignment
Location: On-site at a partner school; varies by assignment
Start Date: Rolling openings based on school schedules

Position Overview
Concorde Education is seeking an engaging, student-centered Band Teacher to facilitate a short-format after-school band enrichment course for students (grade band varies by assignment). This course supports students in developing foundational musicianship, ensemble skills, and performance confidence through structured rehearsals and group music-making. Instruction may serve beginner musicians, mixed-experience ensembles, or instrument-section focused groups depending on the site’s needs and available instruments.

The Band Teacher will establish clear routines for rehearsal, instrument care, and collaboration. Instruction should be inclusive, appropriately scaffolded, and aligned with school expectations and site policies. The instructor will deliver instruction across a typical 10-week cycle, with pacing adapted to student readiness and site logistics.

What You Will Teach
Students will learn core band skills such as posture and playing technique, instrument care, reading basic notation, rhythm and counting, listening across the ensemble, following a conductor, and performing as a group. Depending on the site, instruction may include sectionals, beginner method work, ensemble repertoire development, and preparation for a culminating performance or showcase.

Major Topics Can Include

  • Ensemble norms and rehearsal expectations (focus, respect, collaboration)
  • Instrument care, setup, and maintenance routines (age-appropriate)
  • Tone production fundamentals (breathing/embouchure for winds; bowing basics for strings if applicable; sticking for percussion)
  • Posture, hand position, and technique fundamentals
  • Reading music basics (staff, clefs as applicable, notes, rests, rhythm values)
  • Counting and rhythm practice (subdivision, tempo, steady beat)
  • Scales and foundational exercises (level-dependent)
  • Listening skills (blend, balance, tuning, entrances, cutoffs)
  • Ensemble skills (following a conductor, dynamics, articulation, phrasing)
  • Rehearsal strategies (chunking, slow practice, repetition, goal-setting)
  • Performance preparation (stage presence, etiquette, reflection)

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver a 10-session band course with clear objectives and structured rehearsal plans
  • Differentiate instruction for mixed ability levels and provide targeted support by section/instrument
  • Maintain safe routines for instrument handling, storage, and classroom management
  • Create an inclusive, supportive environment that encourages participation and persistence
  • Communicate professionally with site staff and Concorde program contacts regarding attendance and session completion tracking
  • Adapt pacing and repertoire to student readiness and site logistics while maintaining intended outcomes
  • Support students in preparing for a culminating performance or showcase (as applicable)

Qualifications (Required)

  • Minimum of 60 college credits (or Associate degree in progress/completed)
  • Demonstrated experience teaching or directing ensembles and/or providing instrument instruction
  • Proficiency in music fundamentals and rehearsal pedagogy (beginner to intermediate level)
  • Experience working with school-age students in structured settings (school, after-school, camps, youth ensembles)
  • Strong facilitation skills, clear communication, and confident classroom presence
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional; able to follow school policies and program boundaries
  • Comfort supporting rehearsal in a school setting with varied instrumentation and limited rehearsal time
