A certified pool operator( CPO) is responsible for maintaining the safety and cleanliness of a swimming pool by monitoring water chemistry, adjusting chemicals , as needed, operating pool equipment, performing regular cleaning tasks, and ensuring compliance with local safety regulations, all while upholding the highest standards of pool maintenance and user safety; essentially, they are the primary caretaker of a pool, ensuring it is safe and enjoyable for swimmers
Key responsibilities of a Certified Pool Operator:
Water Chemistry Management:
● Regularly testing pool water to monitor pH, chlorine levels, and other
chemical parameters.
● Adjusting chemical levels as necessary to maintain proper balance.
● Understanding the impact of different chemicals on water quality and
swimmer safety.
Equipment Maintenance:
● Inspecting and maintaining pool pumps, filters, and other equipment.
● Identifying and addressing any equipment malfunctions.
● Performing routine cleaning tasks like backwashing filters.
Pool Cleaning:
● Vacuuming pool debris
● Brushing pool walls and tiles
● Skimming surface debris
Safety Compliance:
● Enforcing pool rules and regulations
● Monitoring pool activity to ensure swimmer safety
● Responding to emergencies and providing first aid if necessary
Record Keeping:
● Maintaining detailed logs of water chemistry readings, equipment
maintenance, and cleaning activities
● Reporting any issues or concerns to management.
Required Qualifications:
CPO Certification: Must hold a valid Certified Pool Operator certification from a
recognized organization like the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA).
● Basic Pool Maintenance Knowledge: Understanding of pool equipment
operation, chemical handling, and water testing procedures.
● Safety Training: OSHA certification and training recommended
Work Environment
● Availability to work flexible hours and varied shifts including weekends and
holidays, as required (Peak season schedule: set schedule, 40hrs/week)
● Indoor and outdoors
● Exposure to weather conditions.
● May involve physical labor such as lifting chemicals and cleaning equipment.
Physical Requirements:
● Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
● Able to bend, stretch, and twist
● Able to sit or stand for long periods of time
● Able to climb multiple flights of stairs on daily basis and walk frequently
Compensation:
● Pay: $24/hr
● Compensation for additional certifications (NAARSO, OSHA, NJRCMT)
