Certified Surgical Technologist/Materials Coordinator

OAK Surgery Center, located in Bourbonnais, Illinois is currently seeking an experienced Certified Surgical Technologist to join our team. This position will also have Materials Coordinator responsibilities, and duties will be somewhat evenly split between the two roles (depending on facility needs).

The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly vigilant in maintaining the sterile field.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Dons OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Gather, checks and opens supplies and equipment for the surgical procedure.
• Performs the surgical scrub, and donning gown and gloves.
• Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/ solutions needed for the procedure.
• Assists the team members with gowning and gloving.
• Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
• Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.
• Secures tubing, cords and other accessories.
• Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.
• Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.
• Label, measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
• Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
• Sponges or suctions the operative site.
• Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.
• Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
• Performs instrument, sharps, and sponge count with the circulator prior to the operation and before the incision is a closed and additional count as necessary.
• Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.
• Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.
• Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
• Understands and practices principles of sterilization, universal precautions, and hazardous material management to process instruments, equipment, and supplies through the stages of decontamination.
• Able to perform documentation of biological indicators for sterile processing equipment.
• Understand the Center’s process for maintaining appropriate instrument sets and supplies relating to their sterility, storage, and inventory levels.
• Performs proper technique for setting up surgical trays and wrapping them for appropriately for sterilization.
• Ordering supplies via Envi system, storing supplies, processing invoices, ensuring that inventory remains at appropriate  levels
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Surgical Technologist certification required
• Two years experience in an OR or ASC required
• Materials experience is a plus
