Job Description - Chameleon Theatre: Director Elf the Musical Jr.

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction and supervision of the Manager of Cultural Arts, the Artistic Director is responsible for the overall creative vision and direction of the musical production. This includes interpreting the script, guiding character development, leading staging and blocking, and ensuring a cohesive artistic presentation within the production's budgetary and logistical constraints. The Artistic Director will collaborate closely with the Production Manager, Music Director, and Stage Manager to foster a fun, positive, and inclusive rehearsal environment.
Hours:
Rehearsals take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5 - 8pm from August 25 to November 5, 2025, with a production meeting occurring once per week on Wednesday or Thursday evenings for 30-60 minutes prior to rehearsal.
Auditions will be held in the evening on August 18 and August 20 from 4-8pm
Callbacks are on August 22 the time is dependent on needs with a general schedule of 4-8pm
Tech week is November 10-12 from 4-9pm
Performances will be Thursday, November 13 through Sunday, November 16 with show times at 7pm on November 13 & 14, 1pm and 5pm on November 15 & 16.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING:
Provide artistic leadership and vision for the production, guiding the overall tone, pacing, and visual storytelling.
Direct and block all scenes, working closely with cast members to support character development and performance quality.
Initiate and lead weekly production team meetings with a clear, prepared agenda.
Communicate weekly rehearsal schedules with the Stage Manager and ensure they are finalized and distributed to families at least two weeks in advance.
Lead the charge in family communication throughout the production process.
Develop a vision for the set within the first two weeks of the rehearsal process.
Collaborate with the Manager of Cultural Arts to establish the costume design vision.
Create and implement an educational plan for the cast that spans the entire production period.
Collaborate with the Music Director to ensure seamless integration of musical numbers with scene work and transitions.
Attend and lead auditions, casting sessions, and weekly rehearsals.
Coordinate with production staff to meet creative goals while adhering to timelines, resources, and safety protocols.
Maintain a supportive and structured environment for participants of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels.
Be present for tech rehearsals and all performances.
Assist with coordinating tech rehearsals and performances alongside theatre staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Strong background in directing musical theatre, including experience with staging, character coaching, and storytelling.
Ability to work collaboratively with other creative team members and adapt to the evolving needs of a production.
Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Experience working with youth in a theatre setting is preferred.
Enthusiasm for creating an encouraging and inclusive environment for all participants.
CPR and First Aid certification is a plus but will be provided if needed
Proficient in MS Outlook or other email system for communication purposes is required.
Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
