Job Description - Choir Director and Principal Organist

Description

St. Joseph Catholic Parish is seeking a faith-filled, musically gifted individual to serve as Choir Director and Principal Organist. This position plays a vital role in enhancing the beauty, reverence, and solemnity of the Sacred Liturgy through sacred music. The ideal candidate will lead the adult choir on Sunday mornings at 9:00am, conduct productive rehearsals on Thursday evenings, accompany other major liturgical celebrations, and encourage full and active participation of the congregation in song. The Choir Director and Organist will work closely with the Director of Music, Liturgy committee, clergy, and parish staff to ensure that all music aligns with the liturgical calendar and reflects the theological and spiritual richness of the Roman Catholic tradition. This role requires a collaborative spirit, and an understanding and willingness to learn the role of music in Catholic worship—not as performance, but as prayer and worship that lifts the hearts of the faithful to God 

  

Choir Director Duties:

  • Program and plan music fitting the Liturgical season and readings for all assigned Masses and Liturgies during the Choir season including Midnight Mass, the Triduum, and other special events
  • Assist with recruitment of new choir members and volunteers
  • Plan and lead weekly rehearsals with an efficient use of time
  • Schedule extra rehearsals for Christmas and Holy Week events
  • Show up at least 30 minutes early for scheduled Masses and Liturgies to warm up the choir and be available to play a prelude with or without the choir
  • Work with the music director to ensure all music selections are following the guidelines in the major sacred music documents provided by the USCCB, the Vatican, and the Archdiocese of Denver
  • Have open communication with the music director
  • Collaborate with the Pastor, Parochial Vicar, Deacons, and other staff members when needed  

Organist Duties:  

  • Practice and prepare music for scheduled Masses and Liturgies 
  • Work with cantors to find a time to practice and prepare for Masses and other Liturgies
  • Show up at least 30 minutes early for Mass to help the cantor warm up and to be available to play a prelude 
  • Plays when available to fill in for other Mass times in the schedule as well as during the summer when the choir is out of session
  • Update the music director on any problems or maintenance needs for the organ

 General Duties: 

  • Stay up to date with Safe Environment Training requirements as well as other required training
  • Follows the Code of Conduct and complies with all the Archdiocese of Denver employment standards
  • Attend workshops, trainings, and conferences when necessary
  • Be available to meet with staff or clergy when needed
  • Be flexible
  • Handle situations and conversations efficiently and professionally

Requirements

Job Qualifications: 

  • Plays the organ and piano proficiently
  • Has experience in choral conducting
  • Have knowledge and be familiar with Liturgical Planning and Sacred Music
  • Be a practicing Catholic  

Physical Requirements:  

  • Must be able to ascend and descend stairs with or without the assistance of railings for stability
  • Must be able to play the organ and piano
  • Must be able to lift up to 20lbs  

Start date: Immediate or as soon as possible.  5-15 hours per week (not benefits eligible).  


Salary Description

$20 - $40 per hour
