Penobscot Valley Hospital is looking for a Certified Nursing Assistant to work per diem in our Med-Surg/ED Department.

This  is an “as needed” position utilized to cover gaps in coverage including  vacations, leaves of absences, and other instances of unfilled shifts.  

Per diem employees are required to work a minimum of 3 shifts within a  3-month period.

Position:  non-exempt, non-union, hourly rate.

POSITION: Certified Nursing Assistant Floater     

DEPARTMENT: Primary - Inpatient Services Float - Emergency unit

SCOPE: Provides direct patient care under the direction of a registered nurse.

ENVIRONMENT: Requires standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, bending, reaching, balance, lifting ,pushing patients in wheel chairs and stretchers, and lifting up to 30 lbs. Must have visual and hearing acuity sufficient to assess patients. Exposure to infectious diseases, blood borne pathogens, toxic cleaning chemicals and fumes is possible.               

EQUIPMENT: Bed controls, bed alarms, computer, call system, blood pressure cuff, glucometer, wheel chair scale, air mattresses, telephones, copy machines, patient call system, bladder scan, EKG and safe patient handling equipment.

Job Functions

  1. Listens to shift report and collects data to complete assignment.
  2. Reviews care plan and nursing care orders.
  3. Makes initial rounds and greets each patient assigned.
  4. Performs vital signs and weights, and chemstrips where indicated.
  5. Assists with meal service by passing trays, offering alternatives, and assisting with eating; supplies fresh water.
  6. Checks for incontinence as applicable.
  7. Performs hourly rounding on all assigned patients for turning, repositioning, and toileting as needed.
  8. Assist patients with personal care needs, i.e. bathing, hygiene, toileting and dressing.
  9. Documents care given in electronic medical record.
  10. Attends staff meetings and education.
  11. Provides on going report to RN as needed.
  12. Reviews all new policies and procedures.
  13. Adjusts work load with co-workers.
  14. Answers call bells and phone promptly.
  15. Performs rounds to pick up and organize patient rooms.
  16. Uses restraints properly and avoids use if possible.
  17. Instructs patients on transfers, ambulation, and care being given.
  18. Explains aspects of routine care to patients and family members.
  19. Assists with family education of patient abilities and needs.
  20. Assist with registration process off hours as needed.
  21. Assist with chart preparation and transfer information off hours as needed.
  22. Performs specimen collection and proper labeling within scope.

Quality Improvement

Actively participates in the Hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program, actively supports and implements Department-specific Quality improvement initiatives and projects, recommends process improvement as appropriate, reports any quality issues in service delivery and consistently commits to a focus on quality improvement and organizational excellence.

 As an employee of Penobscot Valley Hospital, the position has an inherent role to care for our community members when in need. To this regard, the incumbent will be expected to participate in emergency/disaster preparedness planning and drills as requested. When called upon during a real life disaster/emergency event, the incumbent will be expected to participate in the Hospital’s response to this event, within the scope of professional and personal ability to do so.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent. CNA certification and registered with the State CNA Registry. BLS certification.
