Description

POSITION TITLE: Community Nutrition Educator

RESPONSIBLE TO: Community Health & Engagement Lead

DURATION: This is a 6-month position, with the potential for extension or transition into a regular, ongoing role

HOURS: 8 hours per week. Evaluation every 2 – 4 weeks for increased hours.

CLASS: non-exempt

COMPENSATION: $20 – 23.75, Depending on experience [+$1 bilingual differential for Spanish fluency]

ABOUT COMMUNITY HEALTH PROGRAMS AT FFLC: FOOD For Lane County (FFLC) serves 85,000+ people across Lane County each year. About 1 in 8 adults and 1 in 5 children in Lane County are unable to meet their food needs from day to day. At FFLC, we know that food is medicine, which is why our mission is to reduce food insecurity by engaging the community to create access to food. Those we serve include families, veterans, unhoused, marginalized, disabled, seniors, and anyone with low/no income. FFLC’s Community Health Programs provide members of our community with services that support their nutrition, health, and wellbeing. Community Health Workers (CHWs) are a core component of these programs.

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Community Nutrition Educator is a part-time hybrid position that will play a vital role in supporting the health and nutrition goals of low-income families and individuals in Lane County. By delivering nutrition education to individuals and groups, the Community Nutrition Educator will help participants learn to prepare nutritious meals, maximize food resources, and access local food assistance programs. 

The majority of duties may be performed remotely, with occasional in-person meetings in Eugene, OR, and optional travel within Lane County. The Community Nutrition Educator will report to the Community Health and Engagement Lead.

This position offers a flexible schedule with scalable hours and workload based on community needs. We anticipate the role will grow in tandem with our new community health programming. Every 2 – 4 weeks, the Community Health & Engagement Lead will assess community demand and funding availability to determine whether the position can sustainably be scaled up in hours. 

The ideal candidate will have a passion for nutrition education, experience in trauma-informed training or coaching, and the flexibility to tailor educational content to individual needs. Community Health Worker certification (or the ability to obtain it) is preferred.

PRIMARY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in nutrition educator trainings to become prepared to deliver nutrition education directly to program participants.
  • Contact program participants to coordinate and schedule individualized nutrition education opportunities.
  • Document and track all nutrition education and engagement activities.
  • Provide nutrition education curriculum to individuals, families, and groups.
  • Track spending and adhere to a budget for food purchases and mileage.
  • Provide virtual one-on-one nutrition education and individualized food program referrals to program participants.
  • Attend regular meetings and check-ins with the Community Health & Engagement Lead to discuss progress and align with program goals.
  • Follow billing processes using the UniteUs platform and/or spreadsheets.

OTHER TASKS AND RESPONSIBIITIES:

  • Maintain confidentiality respective with HIPAA laws when handling personal health information.
  • Respond within 3 business days to emails, text messages, or phone calls.
  • Attend all required meetings, including bimonthly All Staff meeting
  • Represent FFLC to the public with knowledge and respect
  • Adhere to applicable FFLC Policies and Procedures.
  • Perform tasks within the scope of work as requested.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS: We value all forms of experience including unpaid work, lived experience, education, and training.

  • Relevant training and experience in nutrition education and trauma-informed care.
  • Experience delivering nutrition education curriculum in English or Spanish.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish (preferred). [+$1 bilingual differential for Spanish fluency]
  • Trauma-informed approach to working with people in vulnerable situations.
  • Comfortable delivering trainings to adults virtually (on video) and in person.
  • Ability to personalize training content to participants while maintaining the integrity of a curricula.
  • Familiarity with UniteUs or other case management systems is a plus.
  • Ability to meet in person in Eugene, OR on occasion (preferred).
  • Occasional travel to other areas of Lane County (optional).
  • Ability to maintain a non-judgmental approach and communicate with a wide range of individuals and lifestyles.
  • Possess a current Food Handler’s Card, or be willing to obtain one.
  • Empathetic, compassionate, and understanding of daily stressors facing people with low/no-income.
  • This position requires reliable access to the internet and a device with video capabilities.
  • Community Health Worker certified with Oregon Health Authority (preferred).
  • Interest in maintaining this position for 6 months or more (preferred).
  • Experience providing individualized nutrition consultations, healthy recipe demonstrations, or other nutrition curriculum to low- or no-income individuals is a plus.
