Job Description

General Statement of Job

The Center for Advanced Training and Apprenticeships (CATA) Construction Trades Trainer provides hands-on instruction to students preparing for careers in the construction industry. The Trainer delivers interactive lessons and practical demonstrations covering core residential and light commercial construction skills, including site preparation, foundations, framing, interior and exterior finishing, and roofing. Students learn to apply industry-standard safety practices, use construction tools and equipment, and interpret basic blueprints. The Trainer supports student skill development through real-world jobsite scenarios and structured coursework. This role is essential in preparing students to enter the workforce with the knowledge and confidence to contribute on active construction projects.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Provides instruction in Construction Trades courses for students of varying skill levels.

  • Delivers hands-on training, demonstrations, and jobsite-based learning activities aligned with industry standards.

  • Implements approved curriculum to support student learning, skill development, and workforce readiness.

  • Evaluates and enhances instructional materials and training methods to promote student success.

  • Encourages student engagement, attendance, and completion of program requirements.

  • Develops individualized learning support strategies to ensure timely coursework completion.

  • Maintains accurate student records, training documentation, and attendance reports.

  • Assesses student performance and provides feedback on skill progression and learning outcomes.

  • Completes and submits all required course documentation and reports in accordance with program timelines.

  • Communicates with Program Coordinators regarding attendance concerns, academic progress, or behavioral expectations.

  • Maintains a safe, respectful, and productive training environment and addresses classroom or lab issues appropriately.

  • Collaborates professionally with students, staff, and peers to support program goals.

  • Participates in sponsor, student, or parent conferences as needed.

  • Travels throughout the College district to support training delivery, as required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Associates degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • One (1) year of teaching or workforce training experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of residential and light commercial construction methods, including site preparation, foundations, framing, roofing, and finishing systems.

  • Ability to safely operate and instruct students in the proper use of hand tools, power tools, and industry-standard construction equipment.

  • Strong understanding of jobsite safety practices and OSHA standards to ensure a safe learning and training environment.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and teach basic construction drawings, measurements, and material estimating.

  • Experience delivering hands-on technical instruction in a lab, shop, or field-based training setting.

  • Ability to supervise students during practical activities and enforce safety, behavioral, and performance expectations.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, manage multiple responsibilities, and meet stated deadlines with attention to detail.

  • Ability to adapt training methods to support students of varying proficiency levels and learning needs.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed and travel throughout the College district using reliable transportation.

  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting workforce readiness, student success, and the mission of South Texas College.

Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • Security Sensitive position: All applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.

  • Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance.

Physical Requirements

  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.

  • Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

  • Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

  • Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

  • Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

  • Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.

  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.

  • Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.

  • Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.

  • Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.

  • Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.

  • Standing particularly for sustained periods of time.

  • Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

  • Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.

  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

  • Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.

  • Mobility to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
