Work Schedule: This is a part time position, 24 (up to 29) hours/week. This is a part time role, with at least one weekend day/week required.
Goal: Our production kitchen is seeking an experienced cook to prepare ingredients, cook, package, accurately price and display Deli products in compliance with food safety policies and practices. The cook also supports Deli operations by cleaning, organizing and sanitizing equipment and surfaces and equipment. Our kitchen prepares giant batches of the delicious foods we stock in our deli. The cook helps to coordinate an excellently merchandised and accurately priced store area with a product mix that meets customers’ needs, meets Co-op purchasing guidelines, and contributes to the financial best interest of the Co-op. They work cooperatively with members of the public, vendors, staff, and supervisors. They strive to keep a positive and solution oriented work and shopping environment. Ensures a consistent and positive shopping experience for customers, peers, and other Co-op staff.
Essential Responsibilities and Functions
• Provide services offered in the Deli area and respond promptly and politely to customer requests for assistance.
• Process ingredients, rotate, store, and display designated products in accordance with established practices, priorities, and recipes.
• Follow recipes to measure, process, cook, bake, and assemble ingredients according to department standards.
• Provide ongoing feedback to department management on safety and staff performance.
• Perform tasks at a pace that is consistent with department standards.
• Monitor food quality, record losses, and ensure compliance with safety and sanitation policies throughout preparation, storage and display.
• Wash, sanitize and store cookware, utensils and containers in accordance with established practices and priorities. Maintain work stations and ensure cleanliness of department equipment, storage areas and display areas.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
- Create a warm, welcoming, informed shopping experience through interactions with customers.
- Provide outstanding customer service; uphold our Customer Service Commitment.
- Communicate customer needs that you cannot answer to Manager on Duty (MOD).
- Provide a proficient, accurate experience at the Point of Sale (POS).
- Complete daily cleaning tasks, cleanup/upkeep of personal areas, and other periodic cleaning.
- Maintain familiarity with all areas of the store in order to best assist customers.
- Use appropriate phone/intercom etiquette
- Communicate in a clear, direct, and respectful manner.
STORE OPERATIONS
- Be dependable: show up/clock in on time, look good, be prepared to do your job, be adaptable to change.
- Read the employee newsletter, departmental journals, and check in with the MOD to find out your role for your shift.
- Adhere to the Attendance and Break policies.
- Adhere to the Staff Agreement.
- Complete your department task list or production schedule.
- Complete training events, meetings, and self-evaluations as assigned.
- Keep accurate records as directed.
- Keep workspace and common areas clean and organized.
- Follow cleaning schedules for the area(s) in which you work, to ensure the store is clean and orderly, and meets customer service and health department standards.
- Communicate equipment needs or maintenance concerns to Coordinators and Managers.
- Adhere to store safety and conflict resolution procedures.
MERCHANDISING & PROMOTIONS
- Display proficiency on Autoscale for accurate and timely results
- Pull out-of-date or damaged products; record losses according to department protocols.
- Work with Managers and Coordinators to ensure reception of orders and alert them in situations where a credit is needed.
- Participate in periodic inventory counts.
- Stock area floor plan and display areas as directed.
- Maintain attractive displays of product and accurate shelf/bin tags
- Offer samples, suggestions, and product information to customers.
- Work with Coordinators and Manager to ensure accurate, up-to-date product signage, including shelf/bin labels and sale signs.
Perform other duties as assigned.
This is a part time position, applicants must be available to work 24 (up to 29) hours/week year-round.
Working Conditions
- Work in a retail grocery store.
- Work in temperature extremes (walk-in freezer, frozen or hot parking lot, hot kitchen, etc.).
- Utilize hand trucks, pallet jacks, grocery carts, knives, box cutters, electronic ordering devices.
- Utilize office machines, cash registers, tablets, computers, fax machines, scanners, photocopiers, telephone and intercom systems.
- Utilize commercial kitchen equipment.
- Utilize Google Workspace, Point of Sale, and payroll software.
- Properly handle hazardous cleaning materials according to MIOSHA protocols.
- Tolerate moderate noise level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 18 years of age.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- At least one year of experience in a retail, natural foods, or cooperative environment.

- Ability to use computer keyboard, mouse, telephone, and office equipment.
- Ability to lift and carry between 20 and 50 pounds frequently.
- Ability to safely use sharp cutting instruments.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk for long periods of time.
- Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, reach above shoulder height, and climb stairs/ladders occasionally.
- Ability to use fine motor skills for typing, grasping, manipulating objects with fingers.
- Ability to write or type reports, and complete checklists in written or digital format.
- Ability to read and interpret small print and alphanumeric product codes.
- Ability to work overnight, weekend and non-business hour shifts as required.
