Job Description - Cook / Prep Cook

Job summary:


The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving meals for clients, maintaining kitchen cleanliness and food safety standards, and supporting a positive, respectful dining environment. This role focuses on meal preparation with limited procurement responsibilities and follows established menus and guidelines.

Qualifications:


Required:



  • Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in food preparation or a similar kitchen role

  • A current Alaska food worker’s card or ability to obtain one upon hire

  • Ability to:

    • Pass a drug screening and State of Alaska background check

    • Qualify for SFA’s commercial automobile insurance




Preferred:



  • Basic understanding of nutrition and food safety practices



Skills required:



  • Basic understanding of cooking techniques and safe food handling practices

  • Ability to create menus, and follow recipes, and instructions consistently

  • Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills

  • Punctuality and consist reliability in reporting to work

  • Understanding of trauma informed care and awareness of cultural differences

  • The ability to:

    • Be a team player, demonstrating motivation, exercising discretion and dependability

    • Be a model to people in recovery

    • Build rapport with clients and staff while maintaining professional boundaries

    • Maintain confidentiality and treat everyone with dignity and respect



  • Basic computer skills and fluid use of electronic communication tools


 


Job responsibilities:



  • Prepare and serve meals for clients according to established menus and guidelines

  • Assist with kitchen procurement and restocking

  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen, equipment, and food preparation areas

  • Support proper food storage, labeling, and inventory rotation

  • Follow all food safety, infection control, and organizational policies

  • Communicate effectively with program staff regarding meal service needs or concerns

  • Interact with clients in a respectful, trauma-informed manner while maintaining professional boundaries
