About the Programs:

Jewish Connections supports individuals and families within the Jewish community through compassionate, culturally informed financial and social services. Building Strong Families (BSF) is a prevention-focused program supporting families with children at risk of homelessness or housing instability. Both programs are rooted in JFCS’s mission to serve vulnerable community members of all faiths and backgrounds with dignity, empathy, and respect.

Job Summary:

The Coordinator of Jewish Financial Assistance / Financial Counselor provides essential financial assistance services across the Jewish Connections and Building Strong Families (BSF) programs. This position works with families and individuals at risk of housing instability, assessing eligibility for emergency financial support, developing individualized budgets, and connecting clients with additional resources. The Financial Counselor plays a key role in helping clients achieve economic stability and housing security, while maintaining trauma-informed, client-centered care.

This position requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of funding criteria, and the ability to establish trusting, non-judgmental relationships with a diverse client base.

Requirements

  

Primary Responsibilities:

Client Assessment & Eligibility Determination:

· Evaluate financial assistance eligibility based on distinct funding criteria for both programs

· Collect required documentation from clients, landlords, and others

· Maintain accurate and timely records in multiple data systems

· Adjust programmatic eligibility in response to fund balances and evolving client needs in consultation with the program manager

Financial Counseling & Budgeting:

· Collaborate with clients to create realistic monthly budgets

· Identify immediate financial needs and develop action steps for stability

Program Coordination & Resource Navigation:

· Coordinate with landlords and other third-party providers to facilitate financial assistance

· Refer clients to appropriate JFCS case management, counseling, and external services

Follow-Up & Outcome Monitoring:

· Conduct follow-up with clients who received financial assistance to assess stability and track key outcomes

· Monitor progress toward program goals and maintain documentation for reporting purposes

Community Engagement & Outreach:

· Represent the financial assistance services of both programs at outreach events and with referral sources

· Help educate the community and stakeholders about available support through presentations and relationship-building

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, Behavioral Science, or a related field
  • At least one year of experience providing financial assistance coordination, case management, or other client services
  • Familiarity with public assistance programs 
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations using trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to establish rapport with clients in a culturally sensitive, non-judgmental manner
  • Clear communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Proficiency with computer systems and client databases
  • Ability to manage multiple funding streams and adapt processes accordingly
  • Team-oriented with a capacity for independent work and problem-solving

Training Requirements:

  • Mandated reporter training (child and adult protection)
  • Confidentiality, ethics, and professional boundaries
  • Awareness of duty-to-warn and emergency response protocols
  • Familiarity with crisis intervention, housing-related services, and trauma-informed      care
  • JFCS- and accreditation-required onboarding and annual training

Physical Requirements:

  • Desk work with computer usage for extended periods
  • Reliable transportation and ability to travel locally 
  • Occasional irregular hours and capacity to work under pressure
