Description

Position Title: Creative Making Assistants  

Reports to: Creative Making Manager 

 

Summary: The Creative Making Assistants work as part of the Curatorial department to plan and facilitate Creative Making programs for all ages that are inclusive, relevant, and accessible to diverse audiences. This position works in collaboration with the Creative Making Manager to develop creative making program sessions and offerings related to the permanent collection and special exhibitions. This position also coordinates the daily operations of Art Sparks and Planet Preschool, Speed’s interactive learning spaces, as well as the Prototype Lab and Classroom spaces.

 

FLSA Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Hourly  

Pay Rate: $16.00 Per hour

Duties and Responsibilities:  

 

  • Assists Creative Making Manager with implementation of creative making programs through program content development, choice and preparation of materials, internal and external correspondence, and facilitation of activities and program offerings. Such as Adult Workshops, Memories at the Museum, and Camps,
  • Coordinates with community partners and vendors under the Creative Making Manager’s direction.
  • Oversees the daily operations of Art Sparks and Planet Preschool. This includes staffing the spaces as needed during public hours, performing opening and closing duties and cleaning/safety procedures, providing knowledgeable and engaging learning opportunities for Art Sparks visitors by welcoming guests to the space, offering information, and answering questions, always representing the Museum in a guest-forward capacity.
  • Aids in the overall maintenance of Creative Making spaces and resources, including interpretive elements in the Museum’s special exhibitions and permanent collection galleries. 
  • Maintains inventory of program materials and equipment, and communicates facility needs to the Creative Making Manager promptly. 
  • Maintains awareness of the Museum calendar for use of Art Sparks spaces for public programs, event needs, and internal meetings, and ensures that spaces are ready for use when booked. 
  • Represents Creative Making in cross-departmental organizational calendar meetings to learn about events, programs, and share Creative Making information.
  • Collaborates interdepartmentally and cross-departmentally in the development and facilitation of Creative Making. Helps coordinate and communicate Creative Making logistics with other departments as needed. 
  • Helps in documentation and record-keeping of Creative Making content, offerings, attendance figures, photographs, and statistics. Administers program surveys and evaluation tools.
  • Collaborate with other Curatorial/Public Programs department team members to develop and facilitate events such as Speed Family, Speed Social, Speed Salon, Speed Slow Down, Speed Legacy, Speed Together, gallery and creative making collaborative experiences, etc. 
  • Evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Attend Curatorial and Creative Making team meetings, all staff meetings, and other meetings as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

 

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position during shift; 2-4 hours at one time, up to 8 hours per day. 
  • Sits, reaches, walks, climbs, and lifts intermittently throughout the workday so the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Communicates using the English language.
  • Sees and hears or uses prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, etc., up to twenty-five (25) pounds throughout the workday.
  • Able to adapt to and work from various locations so the requirements of this position can be fully met. 
  • Willing, as necessary, to work beyond normal working hours, on weekends, and remain accessible when away from the Museum, so the requirements of this position can be fully met. 

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

 

  • This is a part-time, non-exempt position. This position is eligible for overtime pay. 
  • This part-time position will be scheduled primarily on Wednesday-Sunday, dependent on programming schedule and overall necessity. Weekend availability is required. 

Requirements

Qualifications: 

  •  1-2 years’ experience leading art-making workshops with children and adults, teaching in a museum or classroom setting, or other comparable experience required.
  • Artmaking/creative skills are required. Experience working in or with art museums preferred. 
  • Bachelor’s degree, coursework, or equivalent experience in art education, studio arts, art history, museum education, or equivalent preferred.

  • Must be an initiative-taker, able to work with little supervision, show attention to detail, and have excellent organizational skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work accurately and efficiently and keep track of numerous projects simultaneously. 
  • Comfortable leading brief educational tours and facilitating workshops for diverse groups.
  • Presents a professional image in work attire and demeanor. 
  • Ability to function independently and be flexible for interruptions and changing priorities. 

Salary Description

16.00 per hour
