Job Description - Crematory Operator- Nights

Part- Time Crematory Operator- Starting at $19 

Tuesday-Thursday 4pm-12:30am

Reports to: Chief Operations Officer

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is focused on the operations of the Crematory and handling of human remains. It is intended to provide seamless coordination between the ‘front-end’ of our funeral operations (PNW & Heritage) and the back-end Crematory process. The Crematory Operator will uphold a Crematory Operator’s Certification at all times of employment. This person will also facilitate the proper training of those who will operate the crematory in his/her absence. This person will also assist the Prep & Receiving Supervisor with first-calls, and additional preparations as needed and requested. The detailed description of this position includes, but is not limited to, the following:

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintain ethical standards and confidentiality
  2. Maintain a business professional appearance
  3. Conservative business attire, while on First-Calls, or assisting on services
  4. Men (Suit Jacket, Muted button-up shirt, Tie for Services)
  5. Women (Muted Colors, Professional Equivalent for Services)
  6. Casual business attire (while working in the prep-room, crematory, and receiving garage)
  7. Men (polo or casual-dress shirt, muted colors, and slacks acceptable)
  8. Women (blouse or casual-dress shirt, muted colors, and slacks)
  9. Proper footwear (no open-toed shoes)
  10. No facial piercings, no visible tattoos 
  11. Natural hair color, or coloring
  12. Schedules cremations
  13. Operates crematory
  14. Identifies human remains for cremation
  15. Direct contact for funeral operations to contact in relation to cremation process
  16. Fills urns, keepsakes, jewelry
  17. Takes fingerprints
  18. Responsible for checking cremation authorizations for accuracy (RETURNS TO FD IF NOT)
  19. Return messages/calls in a timely manner
  20. Receiving & Preparation
  21. Assists with preparing human remains for viewing (dressing, casketing, cosmetics, restoration)
  22. Maintains organized cooler 
  23. First-Call, Removals
  24. Along with Prep & Receiving Supervisor: First point of contact for first-calls that come in during the day
  25. Determine who is available to go on calls during the day
  26. Complete first-calls/removals during and after business hours as needed
  27. Inventory
  28. Responsible for keeping inventory of crematory & related supplies
  29. Orders supplies for crematory as needed
  30. Forms & Trends
  31. Flexibility to initiate new forms, policy & procedure related to crematory operations
  32. Key-in on trends or additional needs, ideas as related to case load
  33. Light janitorial duties and maintains a clean and clear work station 
  34. Crematory Area (Main focus)
  35. Receiving Garage (secondary)
  36. Assist others within the organization of Fairmount Memorial Association
  37. Family Service, Community Service, Grounds
  38. Community Cremation & Funeral
  39. Maintains active role and involvement in community and civic affairs
  40. Performs other duties as assigned. Job duties are subject to change as directed by management.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to function and excel in high volume, fast pace environment

• Consistently and accurately performs cremation within the law of local or state regulations

• Possess general office skills, such as typing, filing, sending and receiving

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Must be able to lift 50 to 75 pounds without assistance and 75 to 200 pounds with assistance, sit or stand for long periods of time, and withstand short periods of exposure to the elements. For an employee to succeed in this position they will need to be able to solicit information from bereaved individuals and families in a time of mourning while maintaining optimum levels of compassion and professionalism, multitask regularly, maintain records and service requests from multiple cases at once, work independently, do simple mathematic equations, adapt to changing schedules, and contribute to problem solving when needed. Fairmount Memorial Association/Heritage Funeral Home promotes a drug/alcohol-free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing, as well as random drug-testing once employed.

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS: 

This position requires the frequent use of, and familiarization with, equipment such as Crematory/Processor, Cots, Lowering & Lifting Devices, Funeral & Service Vehicles, Church Trucks, Casket Biers, Flower Stands, Electronic Sound & Video Systems, Retorts, Computers, Facsimile & 6-line Phone System, Laminators, Postage Meters, Examination & Preparation Tables, and Cosmetic & Hair Tools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a minimum of 1-year work experience in the funeral profession, with extensive experience in crematory operation.  Individual will be required to uphold a Crematory Operators Certification while employed, and at minimum a Washington State Embalmers Internship license. Individual will be responsible for obtaining the required continuing educations credits (as required for licensure), as well as maintaining records associated with licensure. Valid state driver’s license with insurable driving history.
