Job Description - Custodian and Groundskeeper

Job Summary:


Our Custodian and Groundskeeper role creates a high-quality experience for all guests by ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all visitors and staff.  This position is responsible for daily custodial tasks and basic landscaping, contributing to the overall care and presentation of the Museum. 


 


Key Responsibilities:



  • Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming Museum environment.

  • Perform routine custodial duties, including dusting, vacuuming, and mopping throughout Museum spaces.

  • Clean and sanitize classrooms, meeting rooms, staff spaces, and common areas, ensuring they are prepared for visitors and staff.

  • Wipe windows, mirrors, and glass surfaces for a polished appearance.

  • Monitor and empty garbage and recycling bins regularly.

  • Clean and disinfect restrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, and floors, and replenishing necessary supplies.

  • Continuously check high-traffic areas during operating hours to ensure cleanliness.

  • Respond promptly to spills, accidents, or urgent cleaning needs.

  • Conduct light outdoor seasonal maintenance, including weeding and deadheading plants, as well as minor snow removal.

  • Conduct daily inspections of Museum public spaces to identify, solve, or report any maintenance or safety concerns when appropriate.

  • Adhere to all Museum safety protocols and procedures.

  • Help with special facility operations projects as needed to maintain a high standard of facility care.

  • Assist with setup and breakdown of rooms and spaces for meetings, events, and other functions, ensuring they are clean, ready to use, and set to specific layout requirements.  

  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:



  • Shows a passion for and commitment to our mission, vision, and values.

  • Previous custodial, janitorial, or facility maintenance experience preferred, but not required.

  • Ability to follow and enforce established systems, processes, and procedures with consistency and accuracy.

  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and organization.

  • Great attention to detail.

  • Ability to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and take initiative.

  • Physical ability to perform cleaning and landscaping tasks, lift up to 30 pounds, and work in indoor and outdoor environments.



What We Offer:



  • Starting salary range of at least $16.50 per hour and will be evaluated commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Work Environment:



  • Scheduled shifts will include evenings, weekends, and some holidays.  Shifts are typically between 1pm-9pm on weekdays/nights and between 9a-9p on weekends.  A commitment to work at least 2 to 3 weekends each month is required.

  • This role requires an active, hands-on approach, including standing and walking for extended periods and performing tasks that involve lifting, bending, and moving objects to ensure a clean and safe environment for our visitors.

  • Work is completed both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in varying weather conditions.

  • This role must be completed onsite.

  • Part-time commitment requires a minimum of 8-15 hours per week.
