Reports To: Dialysis Director

Status: 60-72 hours per two week pay period

Shift: 5:00 am – 4:30 pm

Job Schedule: Part time

Weekly Hours: 30-36 hours

Remote Position: No

Job Summary

Performing assigned patient care activities under the direct supervision of nurses and physicians in accordance with established policies, procedures and guidelines set forth by federal, state and local regulations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Under the supervision of the dialysis nurse, the dialysis technician/technician-in-training maintains accountability for the coordination and delivery of care to patients with end stage renal disease or acute kidney injury. The responsibilities of the dialysis technician/LPN include:
  • The hemodialysis technician/LPN assures effective and efficient service and responds to the licensed caregiver's direction any time the treatment varies from normal parameters, or the patient's condition becomes unstable.
  • Sets up and operates hemodialysis machine to provide dialysis treatment for patients with acute or chronic kidney failure.
  • Takes and records patient's predialysis weight and patient vitals.
  • Cleans area of access (fistula, graft, or catheter-if applicable), using antiseptic solution according to infection control, prevention, and facility standards.
  • Inspects equipment settings, including pressures, conductivity, and temperature to ensure conformance to safety standards
  • Performs dialysis using patient access in accordance with physician orders and patient condition.
  • Calculates fluid removal or replacement to be achieved during dialysis procedure. Monitors patient for adverse reaction and hemodialysis machine for malfunction.
  • Takes and records patient's post-dialysis weight and patient vitals.

Other Job Duties:

  • Properly reports any machine, emotional, medical, psychosocial, and nutritional concerns outside normal parameters as appropriate to ensure patient needs are met.
  • Primes dialyzer with saline or heparinized solution to prepare machine for use.
  • Performs proper dressing changes as appropriate for patients’ access type.
  • Properly reports medical findings in patient' s electronic/paper records per facility protocols.
  • Responding appropriately to dialysis-related emergencies.
  • Disinfecting dialysis supplies and sanitizing equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or (LPN) current SD license
  • Current BLS
  • Current certification as a Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) granted by the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission; OR Current certification as a Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CHT) granted by the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology; OR Current certification as a Clinical Nephrology Technologist (CCNT) granted by the National Nephrology Certification Organization. If not certified, Certification must be received within 18 months of date of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills both verbally and in writing including knowledge of basic grammar, spelling & punctuation.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and demonstrate excellent organizational skills.
  • Must have the proven ability to maintain professional conduct, and confidentiality in the care of patients.
  • Must possess basic computer skills.
