Dispatcher - Seasonal - Part Time

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for multiple seasonal, part time Dispatchers. The MDT Transportation Management Center (TMC) dispatcher provides communication services to MDT staff, Federal agencies, National Weather Service, Disaster and Emergency Services, and law enforcement. Duties include road reporting, incident dispatching, emergency communication, variable message sign (VMS) operation, Roadway Management System (RMS) operations and system maintenance. At times, communication requires speaking with highly emotionally charged individuals. There are times of high stress levels, and the Dispatcher must be able to remain calm under emotional emergency conditions. The TMC operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round. Employees should expect to work varying shifts throughout the year including weekends and holidays. The season typically ends in early April, depending on weather. New employees will start on Monday, October 26, 2026 and will complete one week of training during normal business hours. Employees will begin working their assigned shifts beginning Saturday, October 31, 2026. These positions are located in Helena, MT and are not telework eligible.

Required Education and Experience:

·        The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a high school diploma or equivalency. No previous work experience is required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·        Ability to operate a computer terminal and peripheral equipment\: multi-line phone system, and two-way radios.

·        Disseminate information accurately and precisely in person, by radio, by phone, and via RRS.

·        Document information accurately being reported by phone, radio, in person, and by other technology.
